The big story line coming into this game is under-performing super stars. Colts QB Peyton Manning has thrown 11 picks in the last three games, including back-to-back 4 INT performances. Prior to that, he was on his usual MVP pace, hitting open receivers and winning close games. The Colts have looked absolutely human this season – 6-6 SU, 6-5-1 ATS and 2-4 away from home.
On the Titans side of the ball, all-pro RB Chris Johnson has been struggling lately. Last season’s rushing champion has only gained 58 yards on the ground in the last two games. His struggles can be attributed to both aging and inexperienced play under centre. Since Vince Young lost the starting job, Rusty Smith and Kerry Collins have been leading the Titans – to 5 straight ATS and SU losses. With a limited passing attack, teams are keying on Johnson and stacking the box.
Luckily for Johnson, the Colts defense has been allowing 142.8 yards/game on the ground this season – so he’s got an opportunity to step up. Especially if Freeney and Mathis are concentrating on rushing the passer in this matchup.
These divisional rivals have yet to play this season, but Indy has won the last three matchups SU and against the NFL odds.
Tennessee has scored, 6, 0, 16 and 17 in their last four games. They sit with an average of 21.9 points/game on the season, but that’s from early season blowouts. Indy has had troubles, but has definitely been scoring – with 35, 14, 28 and 23 point totals in their last four. They should consistently get the ball into the endzone.
Being a short week, this game will favor the offense – and since the Colts’ O is superior, let’s give them the nod against the spread and on the scoreboard.
NFL Free Pick: While the Colts have struggled this season, the Titans are worse. With QB problems, Tennessee is even more one-dimensional than Indianapolis’ passing game. The Colts should dominate this Titans offense – that has been scrambling to score points. Indy by a field goal? That’s a gift.
