Lines on Super Bowl – Pitt WR Ward Not Expected to be Star

February 2, 2011

Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward, according to the dudes who create the Super Bowl spreads, isn’t expected to be the star on Sunday, February 6th at Super Bowl XLV.

Ward won the Super Bowl MVP for the Lombardi Trophy game in 2005, some call it Super Bowl XL, for catching 5 passes for 123 yards and a TD. In Super Bowl XLIII against the Arizona Cardinals, Hines caught 2 passes for 43 yards while fellow wide receiver Santonio Holmes stole the show.

Will Ward come back in Super Bowl XLV with another huge game and help Pittsburgh secure yet another precious silver trophy?

Super Bowl XLV

When: Feb. 6th, 2011

TV: FOX

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Hines Ward

Hines Ward Total Receiving Yards

Over 48 ½ receiving yards -115

Under 48 ½ receiving yards -115

I’m not a big fan of the guy, but I’m actually thinking that Ward’s going to have a huge game on Sunday. From my perspective, the injuries along the offensive line, and the fact that GB can’t afford to let Mike Wallace loose on the edge, should give Hines plenty of looks. Ward is still a dynamite wide receiver when in single coverage. I love that the over/under on his receiving yards is only 48 ½. I see Hines having a very good game on Feb. 6th with at least 5 catches for 70 yards. My Superbowl betting wager is over 48 ½ yards for Hines Ward.

Super Bowl Bet: Over 48 ½

Hines Ward Total Receptions

Over 3 ½ receptions -115

Under 3 ½ receptions -115

Pittsburgh might be without two starters along the offensive line, Chris Scott and center Maurkice Pouncey. Although the Steelers could be playing “possum” with football fans and the Green Bay Packers, the truth is that Pouncey actually might have to sit out the Lombardi Trophy game. Why is that important? It’s important because QB Ben Roethlisberger isn’t going to have time to let plays develop downfield to WR Mike Wallace. That means he sends the ball to Ward on slants or 5 yard up and outs. Hines might have 4 catches by the end of the 4th quarter.

Super Bowl Bet: Over 3 ½ receptions

Hines Ward Longest Reception

Over 14 ½ yards -115

Under 14 ½ yards -115

My guess is that Ward should have a nice catch and run that goes for at least 20 to 25 yards in this game. He’s going to see a ton of single coverage because GB has to double-team Wallace on the other side. Not only that, but I expect that Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinators are going to create a few plays specifically to get Ward in open space while the Packer D reacts to Wallace and/or Mendenhall. I like over again!

Super Bowl Bet: Over 14 ½ yards
