Let’s Talk Weather and Turf Conditions For Super Bowl XLV Betting
February 5, 2011
Pittsburgh and Green Bay are headed to the Super Bowl, and they brought their crappy weather to Dallas with them. Usually when we talk about Super Bowl XLV betting, the neutrality of the field kind of takes away silly things like home field advantage, and adjustments to turf. With Dallas being pummeled by snow, the only people that will really inconvenienced are the fans.
It’s safe to say that the cheese heads and terrible towels will be out in full force. Both fan bases travel well, and both cities live and die on the victories of their football teams. There will be almost equal support in the billion dollar estate of Mr. Jones.

Jerry Jones and company announced that the roof on Cowboys Stadium would be closed, and remain closed so the conditions inside should be just fine. But which team gets the added benefit of playing fast football on turf in Super Bowl XLV betting?
At first glance, it’s the Green Bay Packers. To win this game they’re going to have to keep on running downfield and using their passing game to move the chains. Pittsburgh ranked first in yards allowed when it came to rushing attacks, so the thought of James Starks or Brandon Jackson having any affect on this game is almost laughable.
The Packers will need to rely on the speed of their receivers to get open consistently, and while they may benefit from the switch to a turf field, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re used to it. It certainly showed this season.
Green Bay went 2-3 SU and 3-2 ATS when playing on turf this season in matchups against the Jets, Vikings, Falcons, Patriots and Lions. That’s not a sturdy record. That being said, they weren’t as dialed in as they are now and their passing game certainly hadn’t found its groove by those points in the season (especially since Matt Flynn played quarterback against New England).
Pittsburgh actually on played on turf twice. They throttled Cleveland in Week 17 41-9 and lost a gimme game to New Orleans 20-10. That makes them 1-1 SU and ATS on turf this year.
The point is that neither Pittsburgh nor Green Bay played on turf a whole heck of a lot this year and even when they did the results aren’t that big of an indicator of anything. The turf or field conditions at Cowboys Stadium isn’t a big enough factor to sway the odds in Super Bowl XLV betting.
Think about why you believe it makes a difference: Green Bay’s defense is built on speed, they have a passing game that can be more accurate and thus deadlier and they won’t be unhinged by errors when trying to stop the run.
Isn’t Mike Wallace going to be the fastest guy on the field in Super Bowl XLV betting? Won’t Troy Polamalu be even more precise if he doesn’t have to worry about his footing on a fast field? Won’t the fearsome front-seven of Pittsburgh be able to overwhelm the offensive line of Green Bay on a stable turn instead of slipping and sliding on grass?
The edge does go to Green Bay overall. I will hand that nugget of uselessness to anyone who really believes that. I just don’t see how anything that these teams have done on turf this season makes the Packers playing on turf any better than the Steelers playing on turf. It’s certainly not a factor that will be affecting my Super Bowl XLV betting, and it’s definitely one that shouldn’t affect yours.
