The Houston Cougars understandably struggled in their first few games with the injured Case Keenum, their quarterback who was regarded as a Heisman trophy candidate this season.
However, they put it all together last week in a surprisingly easy 45-20 road upset win over SMU as eight-point underdogs on the college football lines to improve to 4-3, and it looks like they have settled on freshman David Piland as their quarterback for the rest of this season.
Then again, truth be told, it may not matter who the quarterback is vs. this Memphis defense. The Tigers are not 1-6 by accident, as they are allowing a disgusting 39.4 PPG and 447.6 yards per game, and Piland’s task should be made easier by the fact that Memphis is allowing a bloated 8.2 yards per pass attempt.
The only win by Memphis came vs. Middle Tennessee State out of the Sun Belt Conference, generally regarded to be the weakest conference in the FBS. Also, five of their six losses have been by 22 points or more and three have been by 42 points or more. It is no small wonder then that Memphis is just 2-5 ATS against the latest college football lines.
Granted the Houston defense is bad also, allowing 29.6 points and 411.1 yards per game, but that is still 10 fewer points than the Tigers are allowing, and besides, the vast differences in the offenses more than makes up for the Cougars’ defensive shortcomings.
Houston won this matchup last season 55-14 outgaining Memphis by a whopping 345 yards. Of course, that was entirely due to Keenum being healthy, as he gouged the Tiger secondary for 405 passing yards while the Houston backup QB at the time, Cotton Turner, added 173 more to easy enable the Cougars to cover the -22 latest college football lines spread.
Now Piland is obviously no Keenum, but he is serviceable enough to exploit this secondary again.
If he is as successful as expected, then Memphis should have no answer. After all, the Tigers are averaging a measly 13.9 points and 274.9 yards per game, and they have been equally inept both running the ball (2.7 yards per rush) and throwing it (6.6 yards per attempt). This team will struggle to cover just about all the latest college football lines for the rest of the year.
NCAA Football Insider Tip: The Memphis Tigers are one of the worst teams in the country, as they have been held to 13 points or less four times this season while allowing 41 points or more five times. Meanwhile, Houston still has a good enough offense to take advantage of the miserable Tiger defense, while the bad Cougars’ defense almost becomes a non factor, given the total ineptitude of Memphis’s offense.
Take Houston as one of your selections on the latest college football lines on Saturday.
