The Marshall Thundering Herd and new head coach Doc Holliday seek to get off the 2010 schneid versus former Mid-American Conference rival Ohio this Saturday. Marshall has been more mistake-prone than most teams in 2010, fumbling the opening kickoff of the season in a 45-7 loss to Ohio State and giving away second-half leads in subsequent losses to both West Virginia and Bowling Green. Given that the Thundering Herd has a senior, Brian Anderson, guiding the offense, the inability to hold on to the ball at key times is puzzling. However, Anderson has been part of the problem, throwing five interceptions and only four touchdowns on the season.

The Bobcats made national news the past week, but not in the way they intended. Their performance at Ohio State was so poor that a non-football event captured the nation’s attention.
The Ohio University mascot tackled Brutus The Buckeye, Ohio State’s far more iconic mascot, during the game, in an ambush that was planned for a full year. The humorous incident, which garnered a lot of press, led Ohio coach Frank Solich to lament that his football team needed to tackle as well as the Bobcats’ mascot did. That pretty much sums up where Ohio stands right now. The Bobcats aren’t going to beat Marshall with fancy plays or creative tactics; a team that has stumbled out of the gate in 2010 must block, tackle and execute with precision and consistency. Focusing on anything else would be a distraction for a club that needs to get down to business and perform to the level of its capacity.

If the Thundering Herd are to right the ship, they must trace a path similar to the one faced by Ohio. Marshall has hemorrhaged mistakes in 2010. The Herd has not only committed copious amounts of turnovers; Doc Holliday’s team has done so at the worst possible moments. Marshall would have beaten West Virginia and scored one of the greatest victories in the history of the program had it not been for a fourth-quarter fumble inside the Mountaineer 5. Anderson’s interception-prone play enabled Bowling Green to come back and stun the Herd last weekend. In a game against a decidedly unreliable Ohio defense, Anderson must exercise better judgment. If he doesn’t, Marshall’s pattern of self-sabotage will continue.
Latest College Football Lines: Outlook & Pick
Both of these teams have underperformed so far, so it’s hard to gauge how each team will respond to the urgency of the moment on Saturday. Marshall looked very impressive in the first three quarters against West Virginia, but the fires of that rivalry game have subsided. Ohio, meanwhile, just got embarrassed by Ohio State and will probably be in a slightly better frame of mind. Marshall might win this game, but Ohio should keep it under the number. Take Ohio plus the points.
