Lakers roll into Thunder Country – Los Angeles at Oklahoma City

February 24, 2009

The Los Angeles Lakers travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder in a game that might be much more competitive than it looks on paper. Oklahoma City has been one of the better teams against the spread in the NBA this season. Their straight-up record is 13 and 43. Their ATS record overall is 34 and 21. Their record against the spread at home is 18 and 11.

In contrast to the Thunder, the Lakers don’t have a very good against the spread record. Straight-up, the Lakers are the best team in the NBA right now at 46 and 10, but their ATS record isn’t very good. L.A. is 29 and 27 ATS overall and 15 and 11 against the spread on the road.

Here is the BetOnline online betting line for this game.

Los Angeles Lakers -8 ½ -110 O 222 ½ -110

Oklahoma City Thunder +8 ½ -110 U 222 ½ -110

Here are a few online wagering trends for this game.

The Los Angeles Lakers are 5 and 1 against the spread in their last 6 games as a favorite on the road.

The Los Angeles Lakers are 2 and 6 ATS in the last 8 meetings between these two teams.

The Oklahoma City Thunder is 14 and 3 against the spread in their 17 games as an underdog at home.

The Oklahoma City Thunder is 16 and 5 ATS in their last 21 home games.

One of the reasons that the Thunder does so well against the spread is that they are always awarded a ton of points in the sportsbook. That might be turning around because even though Oklahoma City has that terrific ATS record, they have only gone 4-5-1 ATS in their last 10 games.

That means that the Thunder is starting to even out a bit.

Will they even out enough for Kobe and the Lakers to cover at -8 ½ in the sportsbook?

Maybe. The Lakers have won two games in a row but they haven’t covered against the spread in their last 2 games. They should be able to beat the Thunder by at least 10 to 15 points.

The Lakers got to rest after taking down Minnesota on Feb. 22nd. If they can just stick to what they do best, Gasol in the middle, Kobe slashing to the basket, I see them getting a rare cover against a team that usually always beats the spread.

I’ll be making a bet on the Los Angeles Lakers to cover the -8 ½ points in the sportsbook.
