Kansas vs Nebraska – Football Odds

November 13, 2010

This Saturday, the number 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers play host to the Kansas Jayhawks as they try to hold on to their Big 12 Conference North lead.

The Cornhuskers only loss was a disappointing upset to the Texas Longhorns where the football betting lines makers had the Cornhuskers as -10 point favorites. They shouldn’t have the same sort of letdown game against the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks are just 3-6 on the season. The only question is whether Nebraska can beat the odds and cover the spread.

The football odds makers have set the Cornhuskers as -35-point favorites and the game total is set at 61 points.

Nebraska has dominated the teams this season but they’ve been .500 against the spread. The Cornhuskers are 4-4-1 ATS on the season. One thing to consider with the -35-point spread is that when the pointspread is more than a couple of touchdowns, they are 0-3-1.

Nebraska’s scoring defense ranks 21st in the nation, allowing just 19.1 points a game to opponents.

They’ve been exceptionally strong against the pass, limiting opposing QBs to just 154.1 yards a game, good for sixth nationally.

The one chink in their armor is their run defense. Nebraska allows 161.7 yards a game, which leaves them ranked 73rd nationally.

But as bad as they are defending against the run, they are twice as good at pounding opponents with their own rushing-attack. The Cornhuskers own the sixth best rushing offense. Led by dual-threat quarterback Taylor Martinez and running back Roy Helu, Nebraska is gaining 288.1 yards a game.

Martinez has thrown for just 1161 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions but he’s rushed for 886 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Helu has totaled 906 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.

The Jayhawks are in trouble as give up 202.8 yards a game on the ground and allow 34.4 points per game to opponents, which rank them nationally at 109th and 107th respectively.

Offensively, they rank no higher than 71st in any major offensive category. They only manage 20.1 points a game.

Looking at how the football trends will affect our decision on the odds, consider the Cornhuskers 0-5-1 in their last 6 games as a home favorite of 10½ points or more. The Jayhawks are just 2-8 ATS in their past 10 games against a team with a winning record.

The Jayhawks have gone over the total in 7 of their past 8 conference games. The Cornhuskers have stayed under the total in 8 of their past 10 games.

Without a doubt, Nebraska will win this game but I could go either way on them covering the spread. I like the under 61 points a lot.

NCAAF Betting Pick: Nebraska/Kansas Under 61 points
