Jim Caldwell Has More Experience Than You Think

February 5, 2010

One of the underlying stories at Super Bowl XLIV is the credibility of Jim Caldwell. In the history of the NFL, only two coaches have won rings as rookie head coaches – Don McCafferty at Super Bowl V and George Seifert at Super Bowl XXIV. For may, Caldwell is a virtual unknown, but for those needing yet another reason to place their Super Bowl bets on the Colts, this is what you need to know about this guy.

Caldwell’s first stint as a head coach was when he was with Wake Forest between 1993 and 2000. Since leaving the college ranks, Caldwell has been the principal understudy to legendary coach Tony Dungy and has been a member of the Indianapolis Colts since 2002 as a quarterbacks coach. That means he was on board when the Colts cleared the Super Bowl spread against the Chicago Bears at the pinnacle of the 2006 NFL season.

He’s been an integral part to the development of Peyton Manning and endured the growing pains with the men in the locker room. Even more promising is that he’s learned from Dungy, one of the game’s best. Experience plays a large role in overcoming the pressure of any championship contest, and Caldwell has been in this situation before, though not as a head coach.

This will be the first Super Bowl for either coach, but if you’re a fan of grizzled, veteran experience, the best Super Bowl bet would be on Caldwell. He may be a nobody to the general betting public but he’s been a mainstay to the Colts and Peyton Manning. If he wins at Super Bowl XLIV, he’ll be a somebody to the rest of the world.
