Jets Hit the Mark with Sanchez Pick

September 25, 2009

I always tell people, that it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to be a general manager in the National Football League, despite what many so-called NFL betting experts may lead you to believe.

The fact of the matter is that, more often than not, many of the league’s general managers prove themselves to be more buffoon-like than ingenious with both, their assessments of certain players – and transactions surrounding many of those very same players.

For instance, the San Francisco 49ers’ decision to draft former Utah quarterback Alex Smith with the first overall draft pick in the 2005 instead of selecting former Cal star and current Green Bay Packers signal-caller Aaron Rodgers has haunted them ever since former head coach Mike Nolan foolishly bypassed Rodgers in favor of Smith, one of the league’s biggest quarterback busts.

While many teams make poor draft-day decisions, several others seem to routinely make the right picks year after year – and at least three teams have struck gold over the last two season by drafting rookie quarterbacks that they apparently knew were already NFL-ready.

The latest team to hit the jackpot and cash in on the rookie quarterback blitz that began last season with Atlanta’s Matt Ryan and Baltimore’s Joe Flacco, is the New York Jets – and I say they have hit an unequivocal home run in their quest to find the team’s future leader in rookie signal-caller Mark Sanchez – and no, I’m not just jumping on the Sanchez bandwagon as I firmly believed prior to the draft that Sanchez would turn out to be a very good NFL quarterback.

Now, New York has one less problem to worry about, like say, for the next decade or so.

Sanchez, the fifth overall pick in this year’s draft, has looked nothing short of phenomenal in two games so far, completing 32 of 53 (60.4 percent) passes for 435 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and performed a feat the last time he took the field that not many veteran signal callers can lay claim to in leading the Jets to a convincing 16-9 win over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Week 2.

Now, every NFL team, with the exception of a handful, are going to be looking for the next NFL-ready quarterback like Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco and Mark Sanchez.

Unfortunately, many of those very same teams will strike out in their quest to hit a grand slam homer – while searching for the next Mark Sanchez.
