The New York Jets were a very sexy pick to take down the AFC East this season after picking up a couple of key cogs on the offensive side of the ball to compliment what looked to be the most dominating defense the league saw since the Super Bowl version of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
While an 11-5 record is nothing to scoff at, the Jets enter this NFL spreads battle with the Colts missing a bit of luster from last year’s team after it failed to win the division and came out very lucky in a number of close contests.
Still, the Jets are back in the playoffs and the slate has been wiped clean. With them a rock solid 6-2 SU & 5-3 ATS away from the New Meadowlands, head coach Rex Ryan’s outfit will no doubt take to the gridiron confident that they can overcome Peyton Manning and the defending AFC Champs.
Though the Colts tackle tonight’s NFL spreads once again winners of the AFC South, the squad is far from the dominant unit we’ve gotten used to seeing succeed so many times through the years. It’s not because of lack of talent, but instead, it has everything to do with the fact that the Colts couldn’t avoid the injury bug all season long.
The offense was simply drained of the usual components as Joseph Addai was missing from the backfield the bulk of the season, Austin Collie was concussed more times than the casual NFL observer would like to see, and Dallas Clark was sidelined very early in the season. Linebackers Clint session and Gary Brackett missed a number of games, and the Colts secondary has been completely revamped since the beginning of the season. Oh yeah, Bob Sanders once again found himself on the sidelines all year as well.
Even with all the injuries though, the Colts were able to reach the second season for the ninth season in a row. That said, you have to take into account that nobody else in the division finished with a +.500 record, and that the Colts just so happened to be the best of a very underachieving bunch.
NFL Insider Tip: Rex Ryan is once again talking the talk heading into this NFL betting spreads Wild Card throw down, but this time, I think his club is going to walk the walk. Their defense sports the lock down corners in Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie that will take Reggie Wayne and Pierre Garcon out of the equation. This will force Peyton to have to look to inexperienced targets at this point of the game in the form of Jacob Tamme and Blair White. While those two proved capable, it will be interesting to see how they fare against the hard hitting Jets defense.
On top of that, the Jets have very much so succeeded well in the road underdog role of up to four points winning outright seven of the L/10 times; the last win coming at Pittsburgh as four-point pups back in Week 15.
Bottom line, this version of the Colts just doesn’t fit the bill and I’m looking for the Jets to go into the “Oil Drum” and not only cover the NFL spreads for this Wild Card match-up, but win outright as well.
My NFL Predictions: New York Jets (+2.5) -110
