Is the Money Going on Betting Under the Super Bowl XLV Odds Total or Over?

February 3, 2011

Where is the money going when it comes to betting on the Super Bowl XLV odds total?

Both the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers have terrific offenses. In fact, Green Bay’s offense is ranked 9th in total yards in the NFL with 358.1 per game. The Packers average 24.2 points per game. Pittsburgh’s offense, although not nearly as formidable on paper as Green Bay’s, is ranked 14th in the league. It averages 345.2 yards per game and 23.4 points per game.

Super Bowl XLV Total Line Moves

As soon as Pittsburgh beat the New York Jets in the AFC Championship to move on to the Super Bowl, odds makers set the total line. The line opened at 45 ½ points at -110. Immediately, in less than 12 hours, from roughly 11:00 pm on Jan. 23rd to 9:00 a.m. on Jan. 24th, the line moved a half a point all the way up to 46.

The Super Bowl betting line total was at 46 points, but it didn’t last. The line moved back down to 45 ½ and then on Jan. 25th, the line moved all the way to 44 ½. Another half a point move occurred on January 26th when the line moved to 44. The total line remains at 44 right now.

What’s up with that? The initial reaction was that both Pittsburgh and Green Bay would score a lot of points in the Super Bowl because of the offensive stats I list above. After a day or so, however, most football handicappers took a harder look at the offensive stats and determined that the game wasn’t going to be as high-scoring as they had originally thought. It takes a lot of Super Bowl gambling bucks for a full 2-point swing yet that’s exactly what has happened with the total.

The total went from 46 to 44. My prediction is that it’s going to go down even further. By game time, I suspect the total to be 43 or 43 ½. It might even go down to -42 ½ because Pittsburgh could be missing two players along their offensive line and Green Bay’s offense has close to zero rushing game meaning that Pitt’s defenders could play a zone and still blitz Packer QB Aaron Rodgers.

Therefore, under players should get their wagers in as soon as possible while over players might want to wait it out for a day or two.
