Is SMU Ready to Rock Tulsa? – College Football Lines
October 9, 2010
The lines on college football odds for the game between Southern Methodist and Tulsa on Saturday give the edge to the SMU Mustangs.
The SMU Mustangs are only 3 and 2 straight up on the season, the same record as Tulsa straight up, but a very good 3-1-1 against the spread. The push occurred in SMU’s last game, a 42 to 31 victory over Rice as 11-point favorites.

The lines on college football odds makers must have taken SMU’s record versus the spread into account when setting the line for this game because most football handicappers might have expected a 7-point spread at the least. Will SMU cover the spread against the high scoring Golden Hurricane?

The lines on college football trends favor Southern Methodist in this game.
- The Southern Methodist Mustangs are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- The Southern Methodist Mustangs are 19-7-1 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
- The Tulsa Golden Hurricane is 0 and 6 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
- The Tulsa Golden Hurricane is 2 and 6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
The trends don’t say it but there are some things to like about Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane did lose their first 3 games against the spread, they were favored by 7 points over East Carolina but lost straight up 49 to 51, they beat Bowling Green 33 to 20 as 16-point faves, and lost to Oklahoma State 28 to 65 as 7-point dogs, but have covered ATS and have won straight up in their last two games, a 41 to 14 victory over Central Arkansas as 24-point favorites and a 48 to 7 victory over Memphis as 7 ½ point faves.
Of course, taking on and beating the ‘Stangs at SMU is much different than beating up on Central Arkansas or Memphis.
The lines on college football odds makers just aren’t giving SMU a lot of credit by making them only a 6 ½ point favorite in this game. SMU has played well against much better competition than Tulsa has so far this season.
The Mustangs beat an underrated UAB team 28 to 7 as 11 ½ point favorites. They covered a 17-point spread against TCU when losing to the Horned Frogs by a 24 to 41 score. SMU also was only a point away from covering against Rice in their last game.
Although Tulsa appears to have an exceptional offense, 507 yards per game and around 40 points scored per game, they have faced only one team capable of taking them on the way Southern Methodist figures to take them on this Saturday, Oklahoma State, and in that game the Golden Hurricane got worked 65 to 28.
I don’t believe Southern Methodist will score 65 points against Tulsa this Saturday, but they could keep the Golden Hurricane from reaching 30 points on offense. SMU’s D only allows 27 points per game and it held UAB to 7. SMU should be much better on defense this Saturday since they’re playing at home.
To me, that and the TCU game are the difference. SMU hung with TCU for an entire half, the score was 14 to 10 TCU, and should play better defensively at home than they do on the road.
I’m backing SMU in the lines on college football sportsbook to cover the spread in this game.
