Is Georgia Tech to Cover One of the Best NCAAF Picks?

October 9, 2010

Is the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to cover a 10-point spread versus the Virginia Cavaliers one of the best NCAAF picks in the sportsbook this Saturday?

After suffering a horrendous road loss to the Kansas Jayhawks as 13 ½ point favorites 25 to 28, the Yellow Jackets have bounced back by winning 2 out of their last 3 games.

They beat North Carolina 30 to 24 as 3-point faves, were embarrassed by North Carolina State 28 to 45 as 8-point faves, and then could only beat Wake Forest by 4 points, 24 to 20 as 8 ½ point faves.

So GA Tech does have a 3 and 2 record, but they’re only 1 and 4 against the spread in their 5 games this season.

Maybe the question shouldn’t be if Georgia Tech is one of the best picks ATS this Saturday but whether or not the Virginia Cavaliers are one of the best NCAAF picks against the spread this Saturday.

NCAAF Betting Lines

Virginia Cavaliers +10 -110
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets -10 -110

The trends point to neither the Cavaliers nor the Yellow Jackets as one of the best NCAAF picks against the spread on Oct. 9th.

  • The Virginia Cavaliers are 6 and 1 ATS in their last 7 games on the road.
  • The Virginia Cavaliers are 2 and 5 ATS in their last 7 conference games.
  • The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 9 and 2 ATS in their last 11 games after allowing less than 170 yards passing in their previous game.
  • The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 1 and 5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.

Clearly the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, who haven’t been able to cover a spread in 4 out of 5 games this season and has had their lone cover, versus North Carolina, be by only +3 points on the betting line, is not one of the best NCAAF picks ATS this Saturday, but what about the Virginia Cavaliers?

Virginia has looked pretty good against the spread so far in 2010. They covered a 7-point spread versus Richmond in a 34 to 13 victory and then almost upset USC as 20-point dogs in a 14 to 17 loss. They also covered a 39 ½ point spread versus VMI in a 48 to 7 rout victory.

In their last game, Virginia couldn’t stick with the Florida State Seminoles in a 14 to 34 loss as 6 ½ point dogs, but they did at least hang 14 on FSU who is simply a much better team than they are. Virginia might have a better time against Georgia Tech than they did against FSU.

Tech’s D appears to be the issue. The Yellow Jackets allow close to 350 yards per game. They allow 190 yards per game through the air and around 156 yards per game on the ground. So, it’s not like the Jackets can decide to take away Virginia’s passing or rushing game.

Virginia passes for over 270 yards per game and rushes for around 125 yards per game.

That might be enough for the Cavaliers to keep this game within reach. So, even though Georgia Tech is not one of the best NCAAF picks against the spread for this Saturday, the Virginia Cavaliers are.

Virginia is 3 and 1 ATS on the season while the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 1 and 4. Sometimes it’s as simple as looking at the records against the spread, taking the points, and going with it.

I’m backing the Virginia Cavaliers at +10 in the sportsbook.
