Is #5 TCU One of the Best NCAAF Picks to Cover?

October 8, 2010

The TCU Horned Frogs, the #5 ranked team in college football, takes on the Wyoming Cowboys this Saturday and many football handicappers are wondering if the Horned Frogs are one of the best NCAAF picks in the sportsbook to cover the spread.

TCU is a very good team, they are 5 and 0 straight up, but they haven’t been an ATS stud so far in 2010 going 2 and 3 against the spread and failing to cover a 17 ½ point spread versus SMU two games back in a 41 to 24 victory and a 32 ½ point spread against the hapless Colorado State Rams in a 27 to 0 victory in their last game.

Now, the Horned Frogs face their second largest spread of the season against the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday, 34 points.  Will they cover and prove to be one of the best NCAAF picks ATS this Saturday?

NCAAF Betting Lines

Wyoming Cowboys                +34 -110

TCU Horned Frogs                 -34 -110

The trends say that the Cowboys might be one of the best NCAAF picks ATS this Saturday.

  • The Wyoming Cowboys are 5 and 1 ATS in their last 6 games as an underdog.
  • The Wyoming Cowboys are 8 and 0 ATS in their last 8 games as an underdog on the road.
  • The TCU Horned Frogs are 2 and 5 ATS in their last 7 games as the favorite.
  • The TCU Horned Frogs are 1 and 4 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game.

TCU may not be a great against the spread team overall, and the trends do favor the Cowboys, but the Horned Frogs sure look good to cover the spread against Wyoming this Saturday.  Simply put, TCU going to need to start dominating consistently like they did versus Colorado State in their last game.  TCU’s defense didn’t allow the Rams to get anything on the scoreboard and it figures to possibly do the same thing to Wyoming this Saturday.

TCU is one of the best NCAAF picks ATS this week in the college football sportsbook because they dominated Wyoming last season 45 to 10 and are better this season than they were last season.  QB Andrew Dalton only threw for 168 yards and a TD against the Cowboys in 2009.  He’s going to light them up nasty-like on Oct. 9th this year.

TCU also covered a 30 ½ point spread with the 45 to 10 victory over Wyoming while playing the Cowboys on the road in 2009.  Since they get to take on the Cowboys at home this Saturday, they figure to play even better.

I just don’t see what Wyoming is going to do to keep this game within the number.  In last year’s loss, Wyoming racked up 178 total yards because TCU surrendered 3 fumbles and an interception.  The Horned Frogs don’t figure to turn it over 4 times this season.  The Cowboys rushed for a measly 2.3 yards per carry in last season’s game.  Their QB, Austyn Carta-Samuels, who’s also under center for Wyoming in this Saturday’s game, threw for 83 yards and a pick in the 2009 game.

Things don’t bode well for him this season, either.  Although I hate the point spread odds, 34 is a lot, I have to back the home team chalk in this game.  TCU has something to prove to the BCS, that they are just as deserving as Boise State of being considered for a BCS National Championship Game berth, and the only way to do that is to keep trouncing inferior opponents by huge margins.

That makes TCU one of the best NCAAF picks to cover the spread this Saturday on Oct. 9th.
