Interleague Picks – Baltimore Orioles vs. Florida Marlins

June 23, 2009

Baltimore Orioles vs. Florida Marlins 7:10 ET

A pair of Eastern division squads hook up in Interleague baseball betting play on Tuesday night when the Florida Marlins (35-36, +$102) play host to the red hot Baltimore Orioles (32-37, -$239). The Fish have won six of the L/7 meetings between these two teams dating back to the 2000 season, but they haven’t played each other since 2006. The O’s are coming off a very impressive stretch of five games, all wins against the combination of the Mets and Phillies. Florida has been on a hellacious tear of games against the Jays, Red Sox, and Yankees, and finished that nine-game stretch at a very impressive 6-3.

Tonight, BetOnline Sportsbook customers can find this game lined at a pick ‘em, while the ‘total’ put on the board sits at 9 under -115.

RHP Koji Uehara will take the mound for the 12th time this season for the O’s. He may only be 2-4, and the O’s may only be 4-7 in his 11 starts, but he has certainly been incredibly unlucky since opening up the season at 2-0 in his first two appearances. Since April 19th, Uehara is 0-4 with a 3.73 ERA. The Orioles have given him absolutely no run support though, as they have only averaged 3.11 runs per game in those nine. It should come as no surprise that even though he has had fantastic numbers, the O’s are just 2-7 in that run of games. Uehara has very good command, as he has only surrendered 12 walks in 60.2 IPs, and because of it, his WHIP is a very respectable 1.25 in spite of the fact that opposing batters are hitting .268 off of him for the season.

The Fish will counter by sending LHP Andrew Miller to the bump. The young southpaw is starting to show signs of improvement in his second season with the Marlins since being acquired from Detroit in the Dontrelle Willis/Miguel Cabrera deal. He is only 2-3 with a 4.56 ERA on the season, but he’s kept the Fish in the game in all nine of his starts. If there’s one thing that the Marlins had been disappointed about with their big lefty, it’s that his strikeout total wasn’t nearly impressive enough for a guy that can throw the ball 96 MPH to go along with a devastating curveball. Since joining the rotation full-time on May 16th, his K/9 has been incredible by starting pitchers’ standards at 9.82.

At first glance, Uehara vs. Miller doesn’t seem like a fantastic pitching match-up, but this is one that sports betting fanatics aren’t going to want to miss. Both guys have electric stuff and can shut down opposing lineups. Their numbers are as good as a lot of the big “name” pitchers that usually carry low ‘totals’ with them. Consider the fact that it takes ten runs to beat ‘under’ bettors tonight a blessing. Florida is 4-1-1 for ‘under’ bettors in its L/6, while Baltimore is 3-1-1 towards the ‘under’ in its L/5. Nine of the 12 all-time meetings have stayed ‘under’ the ‘total’ as well. Look for a stellar pitcher’s duel in Land Shark tonight!!!

Rose’s Recommendation: 4* Under 9 -115 (Uehara/Miller)

(Rating Scale: 1* – 5*)
