Indy Needs to Win as Double-Digit NFL Online Sportsbook Fave to win AFC South
January 2, 2011
The Indianapolis Colts, a double-digit favorite in the online sportsbook, need only beat the Tennessee Titans to secure the AFC South Division title.
Most NFL sports betting handicappers feel that Indy won’t have a problem versus the Titans on Sunday as -10 point favorites. 66% of pigskin players are all over the Colts to cover the spread. But the last time these two teams met, the Colts were all out to beat Tennessee 31 to 28. Will things be different this time?

Check out some trends in this game.
- The Tennessee Titans are 3 and 12 ATS versus a team with a winning record.
- The Tennessee Titans are 1 and 4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog.
- The Indianapolis Colts are 7 and 3 ATS in their last 10 games on field turf.
- The Indianapolis Colts are 0 and 5 ATS versus a team with a losing record.
Indianapolis has been a decent team against the spread this season, but I’m confused as to why they are such big favorites in the online sportsbook to take down the Tennessee Titans.
Although it’s true that Indianapolis has covered the spread in 8 out of their 15 games this season, the Colts haven’t yet covered a double-digit spread yet this season. In fact, Indy has gone 2 and 3 ATS in their last 5 games. The Colts covered a -4 point spread in a 34 to 24 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Then, a week later, they covered a -1 point spread in a 31 to 26 victory over Oakland.
Indy didn’t face a tough spread in the online sportsbook in either game. Now, they’re giving up a ridiculous 10 points to an AFC South rival that, although out of the playoffs, will want to hurt the Colts’ chances to make the playoffs.
Tennessee’s defense might get pummeled by Peyton and Co., the D does allow 251.7 passing yards per game, 28th in the NFL, but their offense could have success against the Colts’ D.
The Colts have been much better on defense lately, but they’re still giving up a ridiculous 132 yards per game on the ground. The last time these two teams met, the Titans’ Chris Johnson rushed 22 times for 111 yards and a TD. If CJ gets more carries on Sunday, the Titans could keep this game within the 10-point spread in the online sportsbook.
Not only that, but QB Kerry Collins will have a healthier Kenny Britt in this game. Britt should be more effective catching Collins’ passes on Sunday than he was the first time these two teams met.
The Titans’ D is going to have trouble containing the Colts’ offense, which is now averaging 27.5 points and 290.1 passing yards per game, but if Tennessee can control the clock with their running game, then they can cover the spread in this matchup.
I’m taking the 10 points and backing the Tennessee Titans versus the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, January 2nd.
