Indy Faces Must Win vs. Tennessee as NFL Sports Book Odds Favorite

December 9, 2010

The Indianapolis Colts face a must win situation when they take on the Tennessee Titans as NFL sports book odds favorites on Thursday, Dec. 9th.

The Colts don’t seem to be anywhere close to the team that threatened to go undefeated last season. Injuries to wide receiver Austin Collie and tight end Dallas Clark has left QB Peyton Manning looking for someone to throw the ball to. The continued lack of a running game hasn’t helped the Colts either.

The football betting trends favor the Colts in this game.

  • The Indianapolis Colts are 4 and 1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss.
  • The Indianapolis Colts are 8 and 2 ATS in their last 10 games after scoring more than 30 points in their previous game.
  • The Tennessee Titans are 1 and 4 ATS in their last 5 home games.
  • The Favorite is 4 and 1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.

The NFL sports book odds makers are giving the Titans the benefit of the doubt in this game. Indy should be at least a 4 ½ to maybe 5-point favorite to take down Tennessee on Thursday night.

The Colts have been struggling, that’s true, but they’re still the much better team in this matchup. Indianapolis has lost 3 straight games but they could have very well won 2 out of those 3 games. Only the 14 to 36 loss as -2 point favorite versus San Diego was a true, legitimate, loss. Manning threw a pick on the Colts’ final drive in their 28 to 31 loss to New England. Then, last week, Manning through another pick that ended Indy’s hopes of beating the Dallas Cowboys in overtime. The Colts lost that game 35 to 38 as -5 ½ point home NFL sports book odds favorites.

Don’t expect Tennessee to get close enough for Peyton to blow the game on Thursday night. The Titans’ superstar running back, Chris Johnson, won’t get anywhere near his dream of rushing for 2,500 yards this season after being held to 5 yards versus the Houston Texans off of only 7 carries two games ago and 53 yards off of 13 carries last week versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s true that Indy is ranked 29th against the rush, but because the Titans have a horrible passing game, teams have stacked the line of scrimmage against them. CJ is elusive but he’s not a bruiser meaning that he’s had trouble moving the pile against those big NFL linebackers and safeties.

Indianapolis’s offense is still one of the best in the league. It’s ranked #1 in passing yards with 303.3 per game and produces 26.4 points per game. That’s 4th in the NFL. The Colts have a terrible rushing attack, worst in the NFL and one of the reasons that the NFL sports book odds are what they are for this game, but Tennessee is ranked 23rd against the pass meaning that Peyton should find holes in the defense.

I’m going with the Colts to cover against the spread in this game.
