Drew Gooden played just one game for the Kings, scoring 12 points and pulling down 13 rebounds against the Charlotte Bobcats, then was waived by the team in a cost-cutting move. Brad Miller and John Salmons had previously been traded by this team that is looking at the moment like the most hopeless case in the NBA. You don’t have to go far to find the rumors about the Kings moving out of Sacramento; maybe it’s for real, since the Maloof family, which has interests in Las Vegas, see an opening there. Maybe it’s a ploy to get a better deal out of the city, and there is a pitch on the part of the Cal Expo to redevelop with a new arena as its centerpiece. Certainly the mayor of Sacramento will do everything he can to keep the NBA in town; he’s former Phoenix Suns guard Kevin Johnson.
Danny Granger, Indiana’s representative in the All-Star Game, is still out of action with his foot injury. He’ll be back soon, but not for this contest. Jarrett Jack, who has taken it upon himself to replace Granger’s scoring, has averaged 21 points over the last five games, and had 33 against the Knicks in the recent 120-115 loss. There are probably not many people who would have predicted that the Pacers would win five if their last seven games, including a 100-94 win over Denver on Sunday. Indiana has exceeded expectations of the oddsmakers as well, covering five out of six. In this current string, Indiana’s only home win was at Minnesota, and that is indeed its only road victory in the last thirteen.
Sacramento has had a couple of days off coming into this game, and in the otherwise disappointing 102-89 loss at Utah they got 31 bench points from three players who were acquired before the trade deadline (Rashard McCants, Andres Nocioni, Will Solomon). Still, there is so much uncertainty surrounding this club, including the status of Beno Udrih, who has a bum foot, that we simply won’t buck an Indiana squad that is playing with surprising chemistry and purpose at the moment, and it bears mentioning, still not out of the running for a playoff spot in the East.
That’s why we’ll lay the points with the Pacers, the three-point favorite in the BetOnline Sportsbook.
