Indian Premier League Betting – Chennai Super Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders

April 12, 2010

Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders are sitting on the edge of the Indian Premier League (IPL) abyss with three matches remaining and wins required in all of them if they are any chance of reaching the finals.

The Mumbai Indians are already assured a semi-final spot thanks to a 37-run win over Rajasthan Royals in their last hit out, meaning the odds are stacked against both these teams who, with 10 points each, are one win adrift of three franchises that are fighting for the remainder of those semi-final berths.

Indian Premier League Betting Odds
Tuesday, April 13, (10am EST) 8pm Chennai Local Time
Chennai Super Kings -140
Kolkata Knight Riders +110

The best both teams can do now is ensuring as many victories they can in their last three matches and hope that the better placed franchises falter. They also can play a spoiling role for the franchises ahead of them.

With nothing separating them on the table the bookmakers have given pretty fair odds, Chennai is outright favorite at -140 while Kolkata is at +110.

When these two IPL teams clashed earlier this season it was Chennai who took the biscuits, winning by 55 runs.

Captain MS Dhoni top scored with 66 not out of 33 deliveries while he was afforded good support via a cameo from Subramaniam Badrinath who scored 43 not our off 33 balls.

In reply, Dhoni rotated his quicks and spinners cleverly using seven bowlers in total, early breakthroughs helping their cause with Brad Hodge (0), Manoj Tiwary (8) and Sourav Ganguly (11) all back in the sheds cheaply and regular wickets keeping Kolkata on the back foot.

Kolkata’s fortunes haven’t changed all that much since that defeat. Their loss to Chennai sparked a three match losing streak that was followed by a one win, one loss pattern in their remaining six matches.

After offering so much with two early victories, Kolkata has petered out dismally; their last hit out against Bangalore Royal Challengers was a seven wicket thumping.

Posting what appeared to be a somewhat competitive total of 160, Bangalore chased down the runs in quick time, Rahul Dravid (52 off 35 balls) finally fired while Robin Uthappa (50 not out off 22 balls) continued a good run of form.

Kolkata’s spear head, Ishant Sharma continued to be ineffectual going for 46 off four wicketless overs while Ajantha Mendis (0/44 off four overs) was shown similar disregard.

For Kolkata to overcome Chennai they are going to need their top three of Ganguly, West Indies Chris Gayle and Kiwi Brendon McCullum to post a large individual score.

McCullum’s 45 in his last hit out could a signal of things to come and something Chennai’s combination of Ravichandran Ashwin, Doug Bollinger and Shadab Jakati will need to focus on as the Kiwi still remains as the IPL’s highest run scorer.
