How 2009’s Best “Over” Teams Will Fare vs NCAA Football Spreads
August 30, 2010
The ‘over’ train was rolling for a handful of teams last season.
Check out who those are that were cashing in for you on your NCAA football spreads!
North Carolina State Wolfpack (10-2 in 2009) – Give Tom O’Brien a lot of credit for the way that he has handled his Wolfpack offense since coming over from Boston College.

Russell Wilson is still slowly emerging as one of the best passers in the nation, but no one in the ACC is going to take him for granted this year.
It might have been a rough year for the NC State defense (361.2 YPG, 31.2 PPG), but the offense did its part to try to get this team to a bowl game, as it averaged the 24th most passing yards in the nation (272.9 YPG). Averaging 30.3 points per game might need to be duplicated this year to get the Wolfpack bowling again.
Temple Owls (9-3 in 2009) – The Owls might be on the verge of cashing in on a big time bowl game this year, as they are returning a slew of starters from a team that ran the heck out of the ball and surprised most by scoring 29.5 points per game.
The 2010 version of Temple is playing in what amounts to be an easier MAC conference than it has been in years past, and it now has a new quarterback in Chester Stewart to complement Bernard Pierce, who ran for 1,361 yards and 16 scores a season ago.
Oregon Ducks (9-4 in 2009) – The Quack Attack was thought to take a major hit right at the beginning of the season when LeGarrette Blount punched out a member of the Boise State Broncos and was immediately suspended by the team.
The end result was an offense that still rushed for 231.7 yards per game thanks to LaMichael James, who rushed for 1,546 yards and 14 total TDs on the year. Now, Jeremiah Masoli has been booted off the team. Once again, we expect the oddsmakers to overreact for his absence.
Don’t worry. We think that Nathan Costa can take over and do a yeoman’s job right away with this team as well.
Connecticut Huskies (9-4 in 2009) – We’ve already discussed Randy Edsall’s crew as one of the top ATS teams in the country, and it’s very clear that the offense was what was to thank last season. UConn is known as this team that runs the ball and plays good defense with very little passing game.
Though that’s a true story, the rushing attack eats up a heck of a lot more yardage than you would think. The Huskies ended up with 170.7 yards per game on the ground, which led to an average of 31.2 points per game on the scoreboard, good enough for 27th best mark in the country.
