Hot Eagles Go From Monday Night Football Faves to Sunday Night Football Faves

November 20, 2010

The Philadelphia Eagles are the favorites against the spread in their Sunday night football game versus the New York Giants on Nov. 21st.

The Eagles, who broke a few NFL records in their 59 to 28 destruction of the Washington Redskins as 3 ½ point road dogs this past Monday night, are 3-point favorites over the New York Giants this Sunday night. The favoritism comes from the fact that QB Michael Vick has been sensational this season, when healthy, and accounted for 6 touchdowns versus the Redskins.

Of course, Vick and the Eagles face a much stouter defense this Sunday in the New York Giants. The G-Men go into this Sunday night football contest after an embarrassing 20 to 33 straight up loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Philadelphia Eagles -3 -110 U 48 ½ -110

The wagering trends favor both teams in this game.

  • The New York Giants are 4 and 1 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Philadelphia.
  • The New York Giants are 12-3-1 ATS in their last 16 games as an underdog on the road of ½ to 3 points.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles are 7 and 1 ATS in their last 8 games as a favorite of ½ to 3 points.
  • The Philadelphia Eagles are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games on Sunday following a Monday night game.

Man, the Eagles offense is good with Michael Vick under center! In the 5 games where Vick has played this season (I‘m not counting the game versus the ‘Skins where he got injured), the Eagles have scored at least 20 points and have averaged 33.6 points per game. Vick is an electrifying, incredible player, but as good as Vick and the offense have been for Philly this season, the defense has been just as bad.

Philly’s D allows an average of 324 yards and 23 points per game. It gave up 375 total yards to the Washington Redskins and 28 points even though the Redskins were pretty much going through the motions in that game. It allowed Peyton Manning, without some of his best players, to carve them up for 294 yards and a touchdown.

Not only that but in the 5 games that Michael Vick has started, or played a lot in, the Philadelphia D has held a team to less than 24 points only once. That was a 28 to 3 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3. Maybe, it’s because they have faith in Vick, but the Eagles’ D just doesn’t step up when Vick is under center. Philly lost 20 to 27 to Green Bay in Week 1. They beat Detroit 35 to 32 in Week 2. They beat Indy 26 to 24 before the Washington blowout.

The Eagles’ Sunday night football game on Nov. 21st is against a team in the New York Giants that has a solid defense and an offense that could score with their own. That might be a problem for Philly. NYG averages 26 points and over 400 yards per game. The Giants have the 2nd ranked offense in the NFL. The defense is ranked #1 in the NFL when allowing 270 yards per game. They allow less than 84 yards on the ground and less than 187 yards per game through the air.

Yes, the G-Men let the Cowboys run and pass all over them last Sunday, but that wasn’t the norm. The norm is that the Giants lock down on their opponents defensively and score 30 points or more offensively.

I have to give the edge to the more complete team in this game. The Giants have the speed on defense to contain Vick and to keep WR DeSean Jackson from burning them downfield. On offense, the G-Men can control the clock with RB Ahmad Bradshaw but I don’t believe they will do that. The New York Giants should go ahead and open things up in this game. WR Hakeem Nicks and WR Mario Manningham will find a way to punish the Eagles’ secondary and QB Eli Manning is the one that NFL football fans should be talking about to win this year’s MVP, not Michael Vick.

I’m backing the New York Giants ATS in this Sunday night football game. The Giants are the pick to put a bit of reality back into the Michael Vick madness fantasy land that everybody’s fallen into.
