Horse Racing – Saturday Quick Picks

August 3, 2009

Both Belmont and Del Mar will showcase full fields and overlaid price horses, hopefully, this Saturday.

It’s the first Saturday of Del Mar which means that the horseplayers will be putting money into the racebook and looking to make some profits!

Let’s take a look at a few terrific plays on Saturday.

Belmont Park

Race 3

Race-time: 2:04 pm est.

State Bred $15,000 n3L 7 furlongs on dirt

Mandate – - He’s 1 and 1 out of 2 races at Belmont, 2 and 3 lifetime out of 7 races and goes for a 28% winning trainer. What’s not to like?

Seeyouatsergios – - The son of Crafty C.T. could be the lone speed in this race which makes him a tough horse to look past but he’s going up in class. Expect good odds.

Buy A Personality – - He has a good shot of winning based on the fact he’s dropping in class and into state bred company after racing at the open $25,000 level. But he’s slow early which means he could end up finishing third.

Race 8

Race-time: 4:44 pm est.

State Bred Optional Claiming $30,000 n2x 1 1/16th miles on inner turf

Gold Pageantry – - Goes to Linda Rice, gets Alan Garcia to ride, and is coming off of a layoff which is where he’s been most successful. He also figures to go off as an overlay.

Extra Zip – - He’ll be super chalky but if he repeats any one of his last two races, then he wins this easily. Then again, he’s up for a tag which means his connections can’t have a lot of faith that he isn’t over the top.

Stormy Success – - He’s been in excellent form recently and gets the rail where jockey Jose Lezcano can see what folds in front of him and save some ground.

Del Mar

Race 5

Race-time: 7:05 pm est.

$65,000 Allowance Optional Claiming 1 mile on turf

Victor’s Cry – - This son of Street Cry will be coming off of a layoff for Eoin Harty and has been working up a storm in the a.m. He had been running at the $80,000 optional claiming level which means he has a shot to do some good things against this field.

Great Siege – - His last race was fantastic, gets Victor Espinoza and could stalk or close depending on the pace.

Red Alert Day – - He switches barns from Bobby Frankel to Neil Drysdale and stretches out in this. He could be the chalk, but getting Garrett Gomez to ride is huge.

Race 9

Race-time: 9:05 pm est.

$57,000 Allowance 6 ½ furlongs on Polytrack

Majormotionpicture – - He hasn’t been seen since he broke his maiden last August at Del Mar. He’s been working like gangbusters in the morning and figures to be ready to fire off the bench.

Position A – - He hasn’t really put it together for trainer Richard Mandella, but he’s been good enough for a victory and four seconds out of seven lifetime races. He also returns to the all weather after running on the turf.

Santamonicacanyon – - He will be looking to wire the field. He could depending on the way the Polytrack is playing on Saturday. He has a victory and a second place finish out of three races on all weather surfaces.
