Horse Racing – Pick 3 of the Day Starts with Gulfstream Park Race 7

January 23, 2010

Who knows what’s going to happen at Santa Anita Park on Saturday.  Park officials expect to run live races on Saturday but the rains may have damaged the turf track and the Pro-Ride surface so badly that even if live races are run, owners and trainers will be hesitant to keep their horses in the races.

That’s one of the reasons that I’m turning to Gulfstream Park for my Pick 3 of the day.  The Pick 3 wager starts in Race 7 at Gulfstream Park and ends with Race 9, the Grade III Holy Bull Stakes.

Gulfstream Park – Pick 3

** All horse numbers are postpositions

Race 7 – - $45,000 Maiden Special Weight 7 furlongs on dirt

Horses Used:  4-Mine N Gems, 5-Six Clicks, 6-Bushwhacked, 9-Saint Nicholas

Analysis:  Mine N Gems could definitely wire this field after finishing 2nd with a terrific speed rating going 6 ½ furlongs in his maiden debut. Six Clicks made a furious run but ended up 1 ¼ lengths back in second in his debut at Aqueduct in November.  Bushwacked is a 1st time starter for trainer Jonathan Sheppard, has been training well and gets Eclipse Award winning jockey Julien Leparoux to take the call.  Saint Nicholas is a 1st time starter for trainer Bill Mott.  Bill Mott hasn’t saddled a winner yet at the Gulfstream Park Meet but figures to get one soon.  At good odds, Star Nicholas could be that one.

Race 8 – - $48,000 n1x Allowance 1 1/16th miles on turf

Horses Used:  7-Miss Olivia Rae, 8-Deterrence, 9-Musical Romance

Analysis:  Miss Olivia Rae missed at this distance and on this turf track in her last by a head.  She could close for the victory if the pace is fast.  Deterrence is coming off of a very long layoff but her connections are solid.  Trainer Kenneth McPeek and jockey Kent Desormeaux are a good enough reason to include her on this ticket.  Musical Romance might be the lone speed in this race.  If she is, then it’s going to be very difficult for any other horse in here to run her down.

Race 9 – - Grade III Holy Bull Stakes 1 mile on dirt

Horses Used:  2-Homeboykris, 6-Winslow Humor, 9-Jackson Bend

Analysis:  Homeboykris went off as one of the favorites in the Grade II Remsen Stakes in his last.  He failed miserably but goes back to the distance of his Grade I Champagne victory and has been training well on Gulfstream Park’s surface.  Winslow Humor may have freaked in his last at Philadelphia Park or he might be that good.

This is a step up but he’s got the pedigree, he was sired by Unbridled’s Song, to make noise in this race.  Jackson Bend goes to Nick Zito’s barn after winning 5 out of 6 races.  Jackson Bend has won at 1 1/16th miles before so the distance of this race should be perfect for him.

Combinations:  4x3x3 = 36

$1 Pick 3 = $36
