Padding Your Bankroll: Thursday September 24
While today’s play of the day may come up on the chalky side, there will be plenty of other opportunities to pad our bankroll on Thursday at Belmont Park with a wide variety of longshots.
Weathered looks like she will be tough to beat in the $65,000 Belle Born Stakes, a New York bred stake going 1 1/16 miles on the main track.
The four-year-old filly has been keeping tougher company, exiting a pair of Grade 1 races and should have no problem handling state breds.
She is likely going to be a short price, then we might see plenty of fireworks through the remainder of the card.
There are a dozen price plays on today’s card including three in our Late Pick 3 play, which is a $24 investment this afternoon.
Today’s Play of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 3 Belle Born S. (2:04 ET)
#4 Weathered 2/1
#7 My Dinah 3/1
#2 Dean Henry 9/2
#1 Karakorum Fugitive 4/1
Analysis: #4 Weathered gets some needed class relief here as she drops out of a couple of Grade 1 tries and into state bred company. Last out in the Personal Ensign she set the early fractions and weakened around the far turn, checking in fifth. The runner up in that race was Swift Temper, who came back to win the Ruffian (G1) in her next outing on Sept. 12. The cut back in distance should suit as well, and she moves up if the rains come. She has won 3 of 5 over off going.
#7 My Dinah tracked the early pace, took over the lead and opened up and looked like a sure winner but she ran out of gas late, coming up a couple of heads back in third in the NY bred Saratoga Dew. That was at the Spa, the cut back to one turn here should suit, and she has run well here (8-2-3-1). She will also benefit if the track comes up wet, she has won 3 of 6 on wet tracks in her career. She will need a near career top to beat our top pick but looks better than the rest in here.
Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 9/5 or better.
EX: 4,7 / 1,2,4,7
TRI: 4,7 / 1,2,4,7 / 1,2,4,7,8
Today’s Pick 3 Play from Belmont Park:
Starting in Race 7: $1: 2,3,5,8 / 1,2 / 5,12,13 = $24
BEL Race 7 Clm $25,000B (4:12 ET)
#8 Ruby’s Tune, #2 Platinumplus, #5 Beboblues Art, #3 Quiet Alice
#8 Ruby’s Tune saved ground much of the trip, had to wait for some running room and rallied mildly after splitting runners to finish fifth last out. Two back this gal beat $25K non-winners of two over the turf here. While she earned a career top speed fig last out her recent numbers are checking in on the light side. She does return to a turf course she has run well over and we should catch a generous price.
#2 Platinumplus stalked the early pace, took over the lead and could not hold off the winner late in a runner up finish. She makes her second start after a 2 1/2 month break and has landed in the exacta in 3 of 5 trips over the turf here. She ran a good second at today’s seven furlongs distance here last fall, that was over a turf labeled as good, and with a slight chance of some rain today there may be some give to the ground again today.
BEL Race 8 OClm $25,000N2X (4:45 ET)
#2 Wolfson, #1 Afrikaner / #1a Ziptronic
#2 Wolfson was not a threat last out at the Spa at this level after racing wide much of the trip, checking in fifth. The colt was claimed out of the race by the Ritvo barn that has won with 3 of his last 7 (with a +ROI) first off the claim. The colt has won at this level, doing it in the mud at the Big A back in April and has done some of his best running over the main track here (9-3-1-2). This guys owns back numbers that are a good fit and it is up to the new barn to get this guy to bounce back with a better effort. This is not a real tough spot and we’ll look for a better effort out of this colt here.
#1 Afrikaner beat state bred Alw-1 company last out at the Spa in the mud in his first start against winners. The Rice barn was on fire at the meeting and has gone cold here, 0 for 10 to start this week. Entry mate #1a Ziptronic was the beaten favorite in his last two starts at the Spa at this level, both third place finishes. Completes a live entry for the barn but I don’t want to take much less than the 3/1 ML.
BEL Race 9 Md $25,000 (5:17 ET)
#5 Love of Life, #12 Philotimo, #13 Everybodywantsone
#5 Love of Life dueled for the early lead and weakened late to finish third in a decent effort in the mud over a main track that was playing to outside stalkers and closers. The colt returns to the turf here and he put in good efforts two and three back with a fourth and a third. He is bred to like the turf, a half to three turf wieners including stakes winner Shashebegon ($532K).
#12 Philotimo is making his first start since December for the Asmussen barn that is 20% winners with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff. The colt did not show much in three starts on dirt but comes back here in a softer spot and he does have a couple of sibs that are turf winners. The works are not jumping off the page but that is usually the case with this barn’s returnees.
