Horse Racing Betting – Makers Mark Mile Futures
April 9, 2010
The horse racing sportsbook is offering futures betting on tomorrow’s Makers Mark Mile. It makes sense for horseplayers to lock into the odds that the sportsbook is offering because more often than not, in a race like the Makers Mark, the horse that you like is the one that a lot of people at the track is going to like.
The odds on race day will no doubt be lower than what the sportsbook is currently offering. This isn’t always the case, but a lot of times it is. I profile each one of the horses below in the prestigious Makers Mark Mile and then give you my Top 3 betting interests.
Makers Mark Mile Futures Race-time: 5:05 pm EST
Grade I Makers Mark Mile Stakes
$300,000
For Four Year Olds and Upward
1mile on turf
Pictural +2500 – - Pictural’s speed ratings are on the low side and even though the brilliant Richard Dutrow is his trainer, you really have to look hard to find something that will help you make a case for this fella. He lost by 6 ½ lengths in a $50,000 optional claimer in his last, a race last September. That’s a big move up to this Grade I. Too big, I think.
Society’s Charm +800 – - He won the Grade III Appleton by a head over Rahy’s Attorney in his last but really hadn’t shown that kind of ability before. Does he bounce? Maybe. Or, maybe trainer Roger Attfield really has him where he wants him. This guy is also 2 for 3 on the Keeneland Turf Course.
Cherokee Artist +800 – - Wow. That was some second place finish to the terrific Courageous Cat in the Grade III Canadian Turf Cup in his last. Like Society’s Charm, he’s eligible to bounce in this but Courageous Cat could be the favorite in this and the Canadian Turf Cup was Cherokee Artist’s first race at 1 mile. Maybe, 1 mile is his preferred distance. He’s the pick. Lock into that 8 to 1 right now because this guy’s going to receive a lot of dollars before the race.
Wesley +1200 – - Son of El Prado is 1 for 1 at the distance and drops out of an optional claiming $100,000 race where he beat Wheels Up At Noon and Nownownow. Eligible to improve going from 1 1/8 miles to 1 mile making him a logical long shot contender in this.
Karlian +250 – - Was all out to hold off Gio Ponti in his last. He beat Court Vision by a nose in the Grade I Shadwell Turf Mile on Keeneland’s Turf Course last fall and is 4 and 2 out of 8 races at the distance. He’s a logical contender but is known to throw in a big clunker once in a while.
Court Vision +120 – - Placed 4th in the Breeders’ Cup Mile last October and then came back and was placed 1st in the Grade I Gulfstream Park Handicap after Take The Points was disqualified. He’s the logical choice, but do you really want to lock into 6 to 5 odds on a closer who has won only once in his last 8 races and did so by only a nose?

Passager +400 – - He’s got a grand reputation. Unfortunately, it’s translated to 0 victories and only 1 second place finish to Mr. Sidney in the 2009 Makers Mark Mile since coming to North America. He lost his last race by 12 lengths, again to Mr. Sidney, and that race occurred last July. He’s a serious underlay at 4 to 1 in this.
Rogue Victory +2500 – - He might go down from those 25 to 1 odds since Kent Desormeaux takes the call but let’s be honest, this guy has no chance in this race. He ran in a $32,000 claimer in his last and won it with a slow speed rating. Trainer George Weaver wins at only a 3% clip with his horses running in graded stakes races.
1st Pick – Cherokee Artist
2nd Pick – Court Vision
3rd Pick – Society’s Charm
