Horse Racing – Which Horse Will Finish Last?
May 1, 2010
Every time that we look at a horse race, we’re always worried about what horse is going to finish first, second, and third. Well now, here at BetOnline Sportsbook, we’re going to try to pick which horse is going to finish dead last amongst the 20 entrants into the race!
Immediately, we’re going to call attention to Dean’s Kitten, who will start out of the #8 position in the field. He is the +650 favorite to finish last amongst the 20 starters for a very good reason. He has only run one dirt race in his career, finishing 34 lengths behind the winner at the Pilgrim 150k at Belmont as a two year old. In fairness, the horse that would’ve been the Derby favorite, Eskendereya, won that race by nearly eight lengths over the rest of the field, but Dean’s Kitten finished up in fifth position and incredibly off of the pace of the second set of horses as well.
However, we’re not going to recommend Dean’s Kitten because of the weather. As a turf horse, this colt will probably thrive in the potentially muddy conditions and probably has a reasonable chance at finishing in the middle of the pack.
#18 Backtalk (+700) was one of the last horses that successfully made it into the Derby field, which is why he is a favorite in this situation. Don’t confuse Backtalk as a horse that is a total slouch though. He did finish third in the Illinois Derby and has some great bloodlines to boot. 2004 Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones is his sire, while the great Affirmed, the last Triple Crown winner, is also in his lineage. It’s hard to picture how a colt with that type of pedigree can really finish dead last in a race like this.
A potential sleeper pick to finish in 20th position is #11 Devil May Care. Though we could also just as easily see this filly shocking all of the boys and winning this race, she is totally an unknown commodity considering that she has never raced against a crop of horses such as this. Devil May Care has won three of the five lifetime races that she has entered, but she also has a brutal 11th place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies race from 2009 as well on her resume. If she’s not ready to bang with the colts, Devil May Care could be the dubious horse to cross the line last.
However, our pick is going to be on #9 Make Music For Me. In his pedigree, Make Music For Me has absolutely no stamina whatsoever in relation to most of the rest of these horses. His prep races were all questionable at best, especially a sixth place finish in the Blue Grass Stakes just three weeks ago. At just $218,750, Make Music For Me is the least earned horse in this field, and with jockey Joel Rosario getting his first Derby mount in this race, the equation is set up for a disaster for this three year old.
My Kentucky Derby Betting Prediction: Make Music For Me (+700)
