Horse Play for Wednesday – Pick 3 from Belmont Park

August 3, 2009

Padding Your Bankroll: Wednesday July 22

The final week of the Belmont Park meeting starts today, which ends on Sunday. Then starting next week it is off to Saratoga for the marquee meeting of the New York racing schedule each year.

It would be nice to pad our bankroll this week to be ready for the Spa, and today’s card looks like it could get us off to a good start.

Our late Pick 3 play includes a couple of maiden races sandwiched around the featured race on the card, the $65,000 Donor Stakes.

Today’s Pick 3 Play from Belmont Park:

Starting in Race 7: $1: 1,2,5,8 / 1,2 / 2,8,9 = $24

BEL Race 7 Md Sp Wt (4:12 ET)
#5 Elegant Bess, #2 Es Mia, #8 Won Token, #1 Hallelujah Girl / #1a Lateday Edition

#5 Elegant Bess makes her first start since last summer at the Spa where she checked in fourth going long on the turf at the Spa. She was off poorly in her debut and rallied to finish third going five furlongs on the main track. She returns with lasix for the Serpe barn that is 21% winners (with a +ROI) with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff.

#2 Es Mia prompted the early pace while wide and weakened to finish fourth going long ion the mud in a race taken off the turf. Two back she had to steady in traffic on the first turn and finished well, rallying to grab the runnier up spot going nine furlongs. She cuts back in distance here for a low profile barn that has been live in ’09, hitting at a 20% clip and attracts Johnny V.

BEL Race 8 Donor S. (4:45 ET)
#1 Rosa Grace, #2 Belle Allure

#1 Rosa Grace is one of three sent out by the Clement barn. The filly stalked the early pace and came up short in the stretch last out against Alw-3 optional claimers, beaten 2 1/2 lengths at Del Park. That outing came off a 2 1/2 month break and she may not have been fully cranked. We can excuse her effort two back, which was over poly, and three back she was in too tough in Grade 1 company. That takes us four back where in her U.S. debut she was a solid second in the Grade 2 Lake Placid at Saratoga over yielding footing. If she runs that type of effort here, she would be tough to beat.

#2 Bella Allure is also sent out by Clement. She beat Alw-2 optional claimers last out off a four month break. She makes just her third start since coming to the U.S. and she won a Group 3 last fall at Longchamp. The barn has been going very well at the meet, although our top pick likely is going to offer more value for the top spot.

BEL Race 9 Md $16,000 (5:17 et)
#9 Enduro, #2 We Get It, #8 Triple Glory

#9 Enduro pressed the early pace while in between foes and weakened to finish third last out, beaten three lengths for the top spot. The gelding caught a main track, which was favoring horses racing in the pouter paths that day. He makes his third start off the bench for the Terranova barn. The gelding is out of a stakes placed mare that has dropped six winners, top earner Japan based Super Nakayama ($1.2 million).

#2 We Get It was beaten double digit lengths in each of his three starts but he does drop into a softer spot here exiting a $35K maiden claimer. This will be the gelding’s third start off the bench and the Guillo barn is having a career top meet, hitting at a 35% clip.

Price Plays From Belmont Park:
These are price plays to watch today. A small win-place wager is in order or if your pockets are deep enough, use these runners in your trifecta and Pick 3 and Pick 4 wagers. One or two of these could be the difference between a regular day at the track and hitting the IRS window with a signer.

R1: #7 Mine All Mine 10/1
R2: #1 Queen of Hearts 10/1
R6: #9 We Got Heat 8/1
R7: #1 Hallelujah Girl / #1a Lateday Edition 8/1
R8: #3 Winsome Ways 12/1
R8: #5 Shadiyna 8/1

Good luck padding your bankroll today!
