Horse Picks from New Orleans – Show me the Money

March 20, 2009

Horse Pick of the Day: Fairgrounds Racetrack – Race 9

Race-day: 3/20/2009

Race-time: 6:44 pm est.

Even though the rest of New Orleans is still going through a rebuilding phase after hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, the Fairgrounds Racetrack is doing just fine.

The Fairgrounds usually showcases 9 to 10 races a day, when they’re not dark, and in almost all of those races a full field between 7 to 10 horses takes to the gate.

Big fields are important for racebook fans. It’s easier to find overlays in big fields.

Let’s analyze Race 9 at the Fairgrounds on Friday.

Fairgrounds Racetrack – Race 9

State Bred Allowance $48,000 n3L

For Accredited LA Bred Three Year Olds and Up Which Have Never Won Three Races

6 furlongs on dirt

Righteous Brother – - 9/2 morning line

There is enough speed in here to set up Righteous Brother who should be 2 to 4 lengths off the pace in the early going. Trainer Steve Asmussen sends this son of Storm Passage to the track and jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, who is winning at a 20% clip with his mounts, takes the call. Righteous Brother is in excellent form with 2 wins and 2 seconds in his last 4 races.

General G – - 7/2 morning line

General G is one of those speedsters that could get caught up into a pace duel. The advantage that General G has over his other pace rivals is that jockey J M Campbell will be able to see what the other speedsters are doing to the inside of him. The outside draw will work to General G’s advantage and the fact he’s trained by Brett Calhoun cannot be overlooked.

Taylortown – - 10/1 morning line

Taylortown has some back class and his first race off of a layoff, a 5th place finish by 3 ¾ lengths, wasn’t nearly as bad as it looks in the racing form. He switches to jockey Corie Lanerie and he likes the Fairgrounds with 2 thirds and a second out of 5 lifetime races in New Orleans. He isn’t without a shot in this.

Wagering Strategy

I like Righteous Brother a lot at 9/2 to win and place. This race sets up perfectly for him. I will put Righteous Brother, Taylortown and General G into an exacta and trifecta box.
