Horse Pick of the Day – Portland Meadows
January 14, 2009
Race-day: 3:33 pm pst.
There is a small track in Oregon called Portland Meadows. It’s rare to find a sports betting fan that knows anything about the track.
There’s a reason for that. Most online racebooks don’t offer races on Portland Meadows. But the BetOnline Sportsbook does! It offers races on every single North American track in existence.
Finding an overlay at Portland Meadows could prove beneficial to online horse bet fans looking to make a nice score on a Tuesday.
Let’s get to it!
Portland Meadows – - Race 7
Claiming $2,500 n2L
For Four Year Olds and Up
5 furlongs on dirt
Dylan’s Prospect – - 4/1 online betting odds
Dylan’s Prospect is a stand-out in this race after losing by 18 lengths at the $6,250 level, and then dropping to the $4,000 level and finishing 4th by 1 ¾ lengths. He’s just as fast as the two chalks in this and he can stalk while the two chalks will almost have to battle each other into submission. Jockey William Ives hasn’t won a race at this meet yet and trainer Dayson Lavanway is 0 for 9, but this is a $2,500 claimer and this gelding broke his maiden for $11,000 in June. He’s as good as anything in here and I truly believe he holds his 4 to 1 online betting odds.
Alyak’s Superstar – - 6/1 online betting odds
His speed ratings aren’t very good but no horse in this race has good speed ratings. That’s the biggest negative. Another negative is that he broke his maiden for $8,000 in October of 2007 and has only had five races since. That makes him a loser in my book. But a loser could win this race. The major positive is that he won’t be fighting for the lead and the top jockey at Portland Meadows, J. Matias, takes the call. Why not?
Mo Fasta Mo Betta – - 5/2 online betting odds
The chalk has nice speed ratings and gets a decent jockey in Troy Stillwell but after that there isn’t a whole lot to like. Trainer Gary Morris is 0 for 17 with layoff horses and Mo Fasta Mo Betta is coming off of a layoff. Why isn’t Morris trying this fellas in a better race? Maybe, he’s just not that good. He’s definitely not going to get any of my horse betting dollars to win at the online odds of 5 to 2.
Wagering Strategy
I actually believe that Dylan’s Prospect is a good online bet to win and place at the online betting odds of 3 to 1 or higher in this race. I will also use Dylan’s Prospect in an exacta box with Mo Fasta Mo Betta and Alyak’s Superstar. Since this is Portland Meadows, the pool for the trifecta probably won’t be that big. So, betting the trifecta doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
Good Luck!
