Horse Bet of the Day – Can Rapport Make it Two in a Row in Hollywood’s 6th?

June 16, 2010

The Bob Baffert trained Rapport hadn’t done much under the care of trainer D. Wayne Lukas in 3 lifetime starts.  Then, the horse switched to the barn of the silver-haired training guru after her final race as a 2-year old last August.

What a difference the training change has made!  Rapport absolutely blitzed a field of maidens in her last start, winning by 5 lengths, and will now go into Race 6 at Hollywood Park on Wednesday as a decidedly short-priced favorite.

Can the filly make it two in a row for the Baffert barn?

6 furlongs on cushion track

6-Madel – - 5/2 morning line horse betting odds

Madel hasn’t won yet on an all weather surface, but the daughter of More Than Ready has done well enough to finish in the money in 3 out of 4 races over all weather tracks.  That’s not bad.  The biggest reason to love her chances in tomorrow’s 6th at Hollywood Park is the fact that there appears to be enough speed to set up her pressing style.  She won’t lie too far off of the pace and actually has the ability to vie for the lead if need be.  That gives her a serious tactical advantage in this race.

5-Rapport – - 9/5 morning line horse betting odds

This gal showed a different gear in her last, her maiden victory going 6 ½ furlongs on the cushion track.  She can either lead in this or lie right off of likely pacesetter Wenden.  If she decides to go for the lead, then Wenden might compromise her chances of hanging on for the victory.  If she lies off of Wenden, then she might find it difficult to keep Madel from running past her in the lane.  Or, maybe, she’s just too good to lose.  This Bob Baffert trainee is mighty scary in this race even with the other speed signed on.

2-Toro Bonito – - 5/1 morning line horse betting odds

Toro Bonito doesn’t always get there for the win money but she’s 50% out of 12 races lifetime in the money.  She should be coming on strong for either a place or show spot.  Counting on this group to go fast enough for her late kick might not be the wisest thing to do, however, so this late closing daughter of El Corredor will be best used underneath instead of on top.

Horse Wagering Strategy

This race really sets up for Madel’s press and pounce style.  If Rapport doesn’t grab an easy lead and keep going (a definite possibility!), then Madel should be the one to pick up the pieces.

I’m going to bet Madel to win.  I will play an exacta box with Madel and Rapport.  I will play another exacta keying Madel and Rapport over Toro Bonito.  Finally, I will play a trifecta with Madel and Rapport over Madel, Rapport, Toro Bonito over ALL.

Good luck!
