Funny how things work throughout the course of an entire football season. The Packers were slight favorites over the Minnesota Vikings to win the NFC North Division with the Chicago Bears being nothing more than an afterthought at the outset of the season. Ironically, it was the Bears that ended up cruising to the divisional title with the Packers only qualifying for the post season when they toppled the Bears 10-3 in the teams Week 17 NFC spreads finale.
Now, after going on the road and taking it to both the Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons, the Packers find themselves 3.5-point road favorites to represent the NFC in the upcoming Super Bowl betting. And that number still takes into account the fact that Chicago simply dismantled the Seattle Seahawks as quarterback Jay Cutler tallied his first ever playoff win.
While favoring the Packers on the NFC spreads even though the team lost 20-17 at Soldier Field might seem ludicrous to the novice fan or sports bettor, it’s extremely warranted. If not for getting ravaged by injuries on both sides of the ball throughout the regular season, there is not a doubt in my mind that Green Bay would have taken the North Division honors.
Now with the team the healthiest it’s been all season long, it’s kicking booty and taking names while cashing NFL spreads along the way. With the O-Line now 100 percent and fully aware of what each hog has to do every down, the Packers all of a sudden have a ground attack to complement Aaron Rodgers and the Packers potent passing attack.
Now Chicago boasts a tremendous defense that surrendered an average of just 17.9 PPG and only 90.1 rushing YPG (#2), but if you can believe it, Green Bay was actually better giving up an average of just 15 PPG (#2) and 309.1 total YPG (#5) this NFC spreads season. Though Green Bay proved to be susceptible on the ground giving up 114.9 YPG (#18), it just limited the potent rushing attacks of Philly and Atlanta to a combined 126 yards the last two weeks. Chicago has only recently found its way on the ground, but for the year, the Bears averaged just 101 YPG (#22).
If Chicago isn’t able to get some breathing room for Jay Cutler on the ground, he will be forced to throw into a secondary anchored by a pair of stud corner backs (Charles Woodson & Tramon Williams) that are currently playing at an ultimate level. With the winner of the turnover battle certain to be the winner of this NFC spreads battle, possession of the pigskin will be of utmost importance.
NFL Insider Tip: The mystique of this NFC Championship Game has permeated throughout the entire country with this being the first time these hated rivals will partake in a game of this magnitude. Unfortunately, there can only be one winner. Which means the loser will not only miss out on going to Super Bowl XLV, but it will also be forced to have the game thrown in their face for eternity; who knows when both the Packers and Bears will ever meet up in the NFC Championship Game again?
This will no doubt be an all out white knuckled brawl that will be competitive the whole way through; just like the two NFC spreads battles these squads partook in throughout the regular season.
That said; not even home field advantage will allow for the Bears to win the most important game the franchise has played in since it lost to the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI. Green Bay is favored in this one for a reason, as it is 9-3 ATS its L/12 trips to Soldier Field and looking the part of an NFL Champion. The early season injuries might just play out to be a blessing in disguise, as the Packers have been the most impressive team in the NFC spreads playoffs to date, and it will scalp yet another victim before turning its attention to Dallas.
My NFL Predictions: Green Bay Packers (-3.5) -110 + Under 43.5 (-110)
