Green Bay at Detroit NFL Picks – Can Packers Keep Pace in NFC North?

December 12, 2010

The race between the Bears and Packers could come down to the end and the NFL picks crowd is going with Green Bay in most cases.

But the Packers will have to avoid a letdown this weekend against the Detroit Lions in the Motor City.

Can Aaron Rodgers lead his team to a road victory against a banged-up Lions team that still has some explosive playmakers?

Green Bay Packers (8-4) at Detroit Lions (2-10)

1 pm Sunday

Football Betting Line: Packers favored at 6 ½.

It’s hard to believe that the Lions, who said all along that this was a different team, have sunk down to the depths of 2-10 yet again but here they are.

The NFL picks underdog Lions have had an avalanche of bad luck and injuries to deal with yet again, however.

Until recently they had been outscoring their opponents on the season despite their awful record.

Meanwhile the Packers have been going about their business as usual despite injuries to their running game’s key players.

Rodgers simply throws them to wins just about every week and he makes it look easy in some cases.

To win the NFL odds matchup against the spread, Green Bay will have to run the ball some this week.

The Packers know the Lions have one of the better d-lines in the NFL led by Ndamukong Suh who the TV announcers last week called the best defensive tackle in the NFL as a rookie.

He might not quite be there but he is frighteningly good and will only get better.

The Lions are not a team to mess around with when it comes to the pass rush; Cliff Avril had 3 ½ sacks last week thanks to the presence of Suh and that was without star Kyle Vanden Bosch.

The question about the Lions is at QB where Matt Stafford is out and athletic-but-erratic and weak-armed QB Drew Stanton will play.

The NFL odds and football odds crowd knows that it’s not always a good idea to bet on a third-string QB but the Lions have done a good job keeping games close this year.

Green Bay will get their points through the air but their one-dimensional attack will also lead to some Lions sacks and big plays on defense as well.

Detroit will do just enough to keep it close while infuriating their fans again at the end as they did last week against Chicago. They’re a tough team at home even with the injuries.

Pick: Detroit (+6 ½).
