Great MNF Betting Matchup when Jets Tackle Patriots

December 6, 2010

What a great MNF betting game is in store for football handicappers when the terrific New York Jets battle the equally terrific New England Patriots on Monday, Dec. 6 th.

In proving that he does indeed know more than most of us NFL gamblers, Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots have actually been playing better since they traded Randy Moss to the Minnesota Vikings.  New England has been sensational since it’s bye week, they traded Moss right before the bye, going 6 and 1 straight up and 4-2-1 against the spread.

The football wagering trends favor the Jets in this game.

  • The New York Jets are 9 and 2 ATS in their last 11 road games.
  • The New York Jets are 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 meetings in New England.
  • The New England Patriots are 1-5-1 ATS in their last 7 home games versus a team with a winning road record.
  • The New England Patriots are 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall.

Man, I was all set to sing the praises of News England’s ability to cover the MNF betting spread in this game until I took a closer look at the trends.

The truth is that as good as New England Patriots has played this season, they’ve also played just as badly.  The Patriots’ offense is clicking like gangbusters.  Under Tom Brady’s leadership, the Pats have scored 39, 31 and 45 points in their last 3 games, but those scores occurred against the Pittsburgh Steelers, in a 39 to 26 victory, the Indianapolis Colts, in a 31 to 28 victory and the Detroit Lions in a 45 to 24 victory.

What’s wrong with that?  Nothing really, except for the fact that both Pittsburgh and Detroit can’t stop the pass and that the Colts can’t stop the run.  So, New England’s offense got to take apart 3 teams in their last 3 games that were ill suited to stopping them.

That won’t be the case this Monday night.  The Jets have the 3 rd ranked defense in the NFL.  Although New York does allow passing yards, 210.6 per game, they are terrific against the run.  It’s important because if New England becomes one-dimensional, meaning that they have to pass on most downs instead of trying to rush the ball, the Jets’ blitzers could really put QB Tom Brady in a bad position.

When the sides flip, the Jets’ offense should be able to exploit major holes in the Patriots’ defense.  The Jets are still ranked 2 nd in rushing, with 148 yards per game, even though RB LaDanian Tomlinson has slowed down.  LT hasn’t rushed for 100 yards in a very long time.  No matter, NYJ continues to win.  In fact, the Jets average 24 points per game.

That’s a huge issue for the Patriots’ D that gives up, on average, 24.2 points per game.  The Patriots statistically have the 31 st ranked defense in the NFL.  It gives up 288.5 passing yards per game and 110.6 rushing yards per game.

To me, that’s what this game comes down to.  New York Jets has gotten lucky in a lot of recent weeks but I don’t believe that they will need luck on Monday night.  I just can’t go against what the stats are telling me.

The stats are telling me that the Jets’ have the superior defense and that their offense should have no trouble punishing the Patriots’ D.  I have to back the Jets versus the MNF betting spread in their game against the Patriots on Dec. 6 th.

NFL Betting Pick:  New York Jets +3 ½ -110
