West Coast Stakes Races – Saturday & Sunday

Saturday Del Mar Racetrack – Race 8

Where: Del Mar, CA

When: July 31st, 2010 at 8:30 pm EST

TV: TVG

San Diego Handicap (Grade II)

Purse $200,000. For Three-Year-Olds And Upward.

1 1/16th miles over Polytrack

Trainer Jeff Mullins has a lot of guts taking Battle of Hastings, a 1 million dollar winner on the turf, and throwing him onto the Polytrack.

Hastings is a closer but even though speed has been doing well on Del Mar’s Polytrack, I can’t help but love his chances on Saturday.

There’s a ton of speed in this race, and nobody comes close to being as classy as Battle of Hastings.

The thoroughbred wagering odds on the Mullins trainee should be fair, making him the best pick to win the San Diego Handicap.

Red Eye Express wasted no time taking the lead in his last and then going on for the victory.

What’s impressive is that in his other two previous races in the U.S. he had been more of a presser/closer type. The change in tactics proves how talented Red Eye Express really is.

He could either steal this race on the front-end or sit in the garden spot before making a move.

The Neil Drysdale trainee is very dangerous. Unless Richard’s Kid runs in this and not in Friday’s Cougar II Handicap, Sangaree will most likely be the favorite heading into the gate.

The Bob Baffert trainee has had success running at 1 1/16th miles before when chasing Rail Trip in the Grade II Mervyn Leroy Handicap. Rail Trip isn’t in this race.

That means that Sangaree inherits the favorite’s role. He’s yet another contender in a tough revision of the San Diego Handicap.

  1. Battle of Hastings
  2. Red Eye Express
  3. Sangaree

Sunday Del Mar Racetrack – Race 8

Where: Del Mar, CA

When: August 1st, 2010 at 8:30 pm EST

TV: TVG

Horse Betting – Bing Crosby Stakes (Grade I)

Purse $250,000. For Three-Year-Olds And Upward.

6 furlongs over Polytrack

Forget looking for a price in the Grade I Bing Crosby on Sunday.

Cost of Freedom, the likely favorite, faces very little pace pressure in the race, has 3 victories out of 5 starts over Del Mar’s Polytrack, and towers over every horse in this race save for E Z’s Gentleman. Cost of Freedom has won 8 out of 15 races lifetime.

A straight cold exacta to E Z’s Gentleman figures to be a nice way to increase Cost of Freedom’s thoroughbred wagering odds.

E Z’s Gentleman finished 2nd to Cost of Freedom in the Grade III Los Angeles but then came back and won the Grade I Triple Bend Handicap. E Z’s Gentleman is a very good horse.

He’s just not as fast as Cost of Freedom. Smiling Tiger might pick up the pieces for third. He’s the third fastest horse in a race where the three fastest horses should run 1, 2, and 3.

  1. Cost of Freedom
  2. E Z’s Gentleman
  3. Smiling Tiger

Good luck!
