Goosen is the Golf Betting Fave to Win this Week’s Africa Open

January 12, 2011

The European Tour kicks it up a notch starting this week with the Africa Open betting. The favorite in the golf sportsbook to win the Africa Open is old-pro Retief Goosen.

Goosen isn’t the only choice, however, as the terrific Charl Schwartzel and the 2009 British Open winner, Louis Oosthuizen, will be teeing off in the Africa Open as well. Will it be Goosen, Schwartzel, Oosthuizen or someone else to hoist the Africa Open trophy this Sunday?

To Win

Best Bet A: Charl Schwartzel +500

Golf betting fans have to be feeling pretty good about Charl’s chances in the 2011 Africa Open. After all, he won the tournament last year when shooting a sweet 20-under and has started out the 2011 European Tour Season in fine fashion with a 2nd at the Alfred Dunhill and a 4th at the South African Championship. Both of those tournaments occurred in December. So, it’s likely that Schwartzel has kept his form going into this week.

Best Bet B: Thomas Aiken +1500

Aiken is the man that finished at -19 and a stroke off of Schwartzel at the 2010 Africa Open. The golf odds on Aiken can’t be ignored when Retief Goosen is going off at +400 to win the Africa Open and Louis is at +700. Like Schwartzel, Aiken is a fellow South African that is in very good form. He garnered a 5th place finish at the Alfred Dunhill before finishing 14th at the South African Championship. Aiken obviously knows this course well and should put forth a great effort. At the odds, he’s hard to ignore this week.

Worst Golf Bet: Louis Oosthuizen +700

The odds in the golf betting book are way underlaid on the 2009 British Open winner. Louis didn’t even tee it off at the 2010 Africa Open and although the 3rd place finish at the South African Championship in December was nice, Shrek has been following up great finishes with awful ones lately. He followed up a 4th place finish at the KLM Open with a 72nd place finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions last fall. I’ll bet against Louis this week.

Best Underdog Bet: Darren Clarke +3000

Clarke shot a 12-under in the 2010 Africa Open and, although that was 8 strokes off of winner Charl Schwartzel, Clarke did do well enough in this tournament last year for me to make him my underdog bet this year. Clarke is offering terrific odds for a bet on golf wager to win the Africa Open. He also hasn’t teed off competitively since November. That might help him in this tournament.

Others To Consider

Retief Goosen +400 – - The chalk deserves attention after the 2nd place finish at the South African Championship in December.

James Kingston +2000 – - Shot a 16-under and lost by only 4 strokes in the 2010 African Open.

Gareth Maybin +2000 – - Had a bad Dubai World Championship with a 55th place finish but finished 7th at the UBS Hong Kong Open last fall.
