Golf Sportsbook – Mahan and Crane Vie for Golf Betting Favoritism in the Byron Nelson Championship

May 19, 2010

Hunter Mahan and Ben Crane are the two favorites in the golf sportsbook to win this week’s PGA Tournament, the Byron Nelson Championship. Both Mahan and Crane aren’t your usual favorites. Mahan is going off at the nice overlaid golf wagering odds of +1500 while Crane is going off at +2000.

That makes Mahan and Crane two very good wagers in the sportsbook if you like their chances of winning. It also means that the Byron Nelson Championship is wide open.

PGA Tour: Byron Nelson Championship To Win

When: May 20th thru May 23rd

TV: Golf Channel – May 20th 3:00 pm EST 1st Round

CBS – May 23rd 3:00 pm EST 4th Round

Best Golf Bet A: Dustin Johnson +2500

Mahan and Crane have been better in 2010, with Mahan winning a tournament and Crane finishing 4th in The Players Championship, but Dustin Johnson is going off at higher golf odds and there are reasons to like him in this. He finished tied for 4th in the 2009 Byron Nelson Championship and, like Mahan, won a tournament earlier this year, the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. He’s coming off of a better than it looks 34th place finish at The Players Championship. He’s the golf wager to make in my mind.

Best Golf Bet B: Rory Sabbatini +3500

I’m surprised at the golf wagering odds on Sabbatini. Oh, he’s no doubt taken some lumps in 2010. There was one moment when he couldn’t make the cut to save his life but since missing 3 cuts in a row, he bounced back by making the cut in 4 out of 6 tournaments. That’s pretty good. He also finished 14th at the Verizon Heritage and 39th at TPC Sawgrass. The 39th isn’t great, but there aren’t any world-beaters in this and Sabbatini is the type of golfer that, once he gets good on a particular course, usually brings his A game back to that course.

Worst Golf Wager: None

When the golf betting favorite is +1500 in the sportsbook, there are no bad wagers. Every golfer in the sportsook is going off at fair value meaning that if you like Hunter Mahan, then go for it. I like Dustin Johnson and Rory Sabbatini, but I have nothing against Hunter Mahan or Ben Crane at their listed golf odds.

Best Underdog Golf Bet: Rickie Fowler +5000

Fowler’s been hot lately with 4 Top 10 finishes in 13 tournaments this season. 2 of those Top 10 finishes have occurred in his last three tournaments and he’s ranked 10th on the Tour in ball striking. Any time a hot dude like Fowler is going off at 50 to 1 odds or higher, he’s a must bet.

Others to Consider

Hunter Mahan +1500 – - The golf betting fave has what it takes to win his 2nd tournament of 2010.

Ben Crane +2000 – - He’s ranked 2nd in birdies or better on par 4’s, and 9th in fairways hit.

Sean O-Hair +2500 – - His 22nd place finish at TPC Sawgrass might be a sign he’s ready to win a trophy.

J.B. Holmes +3000 – - Finished tied 13th in his last 2 starts and is ranked 9th in birdies or better on par 4’s.

Charley Hoffman +3000 – - He has 3 Top 25 finishes in 4 starts at TPC Four Seasons.
