Golf Picks – Best Tournament Matchup Bets for The Players Championship

May 5, 2010

The Players Championship will be under way soon. That means that it’s time for golf betting fans to get in on the action and make a few potentially profitable wagers on the TPC.

One such wager is betting on which player will come out ahead in tournament matchup betting. Will Phil outplay Tiger? Will Ernie outplay Paddy? How will Rory McIlroy do head to head against El Tigre?

Let’s take a look!

PGA Tour: The Players Championship Tournament Matchups

** Golf odds current as of this writing

  1. Phil Mickelson -125 vs. Tiger Woods -105 – - Yes, El Tigre missed the cut at the Quail Hollow Championship and Phil is en fuego after winning the Masters Tournament and finishing second at the Quail Hollow, but, seriously, -105 on El Tigre? Are you kidding me? I pretty much have to bet Tiger at those odds each and every time.

Pick: Tiger Woods

  1. Ernie Els -130 vs. Padraig Harrington Ev – - Paddy is coming off of a nice Top 10 finish at the Quail Hollow, but Ernie has had a better 2010 with victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the WGC-CA. His 18th at the Masters Tournament wasn’t bad either.

Pick: Padraig Harrington

  1. Ian Poulter -110 vs. Lee Westwood -120 – - Westwood comes to play each and every time. Poulter can be a loose canyon at times, but did win the WGC-Accenture. Still, I can’t look past Westwood who won the 2009 Race to Dubai, the European Tour’s version of the FedEx Cup. His consistency wins out in this matchup.

Pick: Lee Westwood

  1. Jim Furyk -110 vs. Tiger Woods -120 – - I love it! Fury wins two tournaments, almost by default, El Tigre misses one measly cut, and all of a sudden a bet that should be Furyk +145, Tiger -210 is Furyk -110, Tiger -120! Obviously, I’ll be putting a few bucks on El Tigre at -120 to beat Furyk in a head-to-head matchup. Fury missed the cut at the Masters, or have we already forgotten?

Pick: Tiger Woods

  1. Lee Westwood -130 vs. Padraig Harrington Ev – - To me, this is a no-brainer. Paddy just isn’t playing as well as Westwood this year. Lee not only won the Race to Dubai in 2009, but has finished in the Top 10 in 50% of the tournaments in which he’s played in 2010.

Pick: Lee Westwood

  1. Rory McIlroy +120 vs. Tiger Woods -150 – - This is perhaps the most difficult tournament matchup wager being offered in the sportsbook. Usually, I have a good idea regarding these matchup wagers and can pinpoint a few key things. Not with this matchup. Tiger is going to be roaring in this tournament, I have no doubt about it, but I also believe that the 62 Rory shot in the final round of the Quail Hollow was what he needed in order to take that next step forward. I have to go with Rory in this matchup because the odds differential between he and Tiger in this is just too great.

Pick: Rory McIlroy
