Golf Odds – Is Rory McIlroy the Best Bet to Make the Cut at TPC Sawgrass?

May 5, 2010

Golfers will tee-off this Thursday in one of the most prestigious golfing events in the world, The Players Championship.

One of the best markets where golf betting fans can lower their risk is betting on a golfer to Make the Cut. Rory McIlory won last week’s Quail Hollow Championship.

Is he a good bet to make the cut in this week’s The Players Championship? Yes…if you like short golf odds as Rory is going off at -450 in the sportsbook.

I prefer to wager on guys getting slightly better odds.

PGA Tour: The Players Championship To Make the Cut

** Golf odds are current as of this writing

Best Bet A: Camilo Villegas -400

Villegas not only did very well in 2009 at TPC Sawgrass, finishing at -3 and tied for 14th, but has had a stellar 2010 with a victory in the Honda Classic and Top 10 finishes at the WGC-Accenture, the Phoenix Open, and the Verizon Heritage. He’s coming off of a terrible 57th place finish at the Quail Hollow, but all that means is that he bounces back in this.

Best Bet B: Henrik Stenson -325

Stenson won the 2009 The Players Championship. He obviously likes TPC Sawgrass. The big issue with Stenson is that he hasn’t finished better than 33rd in four PGA Events this year and is coming off of a missed cut at the Masters. But, he’s returning to a course where he has had the ultimate success and playing for the winner’s share of a huge purse. He should at least make the cut this week.

Best Bet C: Francesco Molinari -200

He didn’t play at TPC Sawgrass in 2009 but he’s made the cut in the 3 tournaments that he’s played on the PGA Tour in 2010, the WGC-CA, WGC-Accenture and the Masters. He should make the cut again and the odds are actually very good on the well-respected European Tour golfer.

Others to Consider

K.J. Choi -375 – - Choi can be awesome one day and awful the next. He’s usually awesome when there’s a lot at stake like at the Masters Tournament where he finished tied for 4th. He also hasn’t missed the cut in 10 tournaments this year.

Alvaro Quiros -250 - – Quiros missed the cut at the Masters but before that had finished 33rd at the WGC-Accenture, 14th at the Phoenix Open and 6th at the WGC-CA.

Robert Karlsson -175 – - Finished on the cusp at TPC Sawgrass in 2009 with a +3, the cut was +7, but is 4 and 1 regarding cuts made in 2010.
