Golf Odds

To Win Dubai Desert Classic

  • Tiger Woods +400
  • Martin Kaymer +500
  • Rory McIlroy +700
  • Lee Westwood +900
  • Alvaro Quiros +1500
  • Francesco Molinari +1500
  • Miguel-Angel Jiménez +2500
  • Sergio Garcia +3000
  • Edoardo Molinari +3000
  • Henrik Stenson +3000

Tiger Woods did not show much in his first start of the year. He shot 69 in each of the first two rounds of the Farmers Insurance Open, and looked to be in contention, but faded in the last two rounds, shooting 74 and 75 to tie for 44th. He lost his #1 ranking, and even lost his #2 spot, dropping to #3 in the world. but his name alone is always going to bring him a lot of respect in the golf odds, where he is the favorite at +400.

Lee Westwood, as you may be aware, is the #1 ranked player right now. But Westwood (+900 in golf odds this week) doesn’t have the one thing that really gets the respect – a major title. And until he wins one, he is not going to be considered a genuine contender for the throne that, for all intents and purposes, Tiger has occupied for many years. The guy who could assume that position for the foreseeable future is Martin Kaymer, the German who burst into the consciousness of the mainstream golf fans with his win at the PGA Betting Championship last year.

Kaymer really looks the part – he won the Abu Dhabi Championship two starts ago, which was his third title in four years in that particular event. That’s the result that vaulted him into the #2 world spot. Kaymer has now won four of the last nine tournaments he has played in, and with top ten finishes lats year in two other majors, the U.S. Open (T-8th) and British Open (T-7th), he’s going to have every chance to improve to the #1 position this year, especially if Westwood continues to be the "Best Player Not To Win A Major." Right now he is the second favorite to Woods in the golf odds, at +500.

Woods limbered up on Tuesday night, pairing with Mark O’Meara, the 2004 Dubai champion, to win the Dubai Desert Classic Challenge Match, a best-ball event playing on a virtual pitch-and-putt course, by two shots over Westwood and Miguel Angel Jiminez (+2500 in golf odds this week).

When they were playing "for real," Woods and Kaymer did battle in classic fashion in the 2008 tournament. Tiger, who had already won the 2006 event, won by a stroke over Kaymer, who at the time was going after his second win in less than a month after having won at Abu Dhabi. Those who bet the golf odds are asking themselves whether these two will have a memorable clash again out in the desert this week, and whether that will be a harbinger of many tight battles to come.
