Transitions To Win

The Transitions Championship is this week’s PGA Tour Event.  Held at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor Florida, the Transitions will be lacking some of the top stars in golf.

Let’s check out the contenders who WILL be there to win the Transitions Championship.

Odds To Win:

  1. Kenny Perry +2000 – - Perry already has a victory this year, finished 9th in the WGC-CA, and should be able to put together a terrific run in the Transitions at fantastic odds.  Perry is one of the most consistent golfers on the Tour.  He can win this and should relish the fact that he won’t face Phil or Tiger in this.  I like his chances a lot.
  1. Jim Furyk +1000 – - Furyk is going off at half the odds of Perry in this but his third place finish in the WGC-CA last week says that the lower odds might be justified.  Furyk usually wins a tournament a year.  This might be it.
  1. Sean O’Hair +1800 – - O’Hair took down the Transitions last year which is why he’s a low priced favorite in this.  Okay, 18 to 1 odds doesn’t exactly make him a low-priced favorite but he should be comfortable out there and his 13th place finish in the WGC-CA was good enough for a tie with Tiger.  So, he’s not off form.  He can repeat in the Transitions.
  1. Steve Stricker +2000 – - Stricker had a better than expected WGC-CA last week finishing tied for 13th place with Sean O’Hair and Tiger Woods.  Stricker’s 2 Top Ten finishes out of the 6 tournaments he’s played in this year means that he’s hitting the ball very well.
  1. K.J. Choi +2000 – - Choi has a chance to win the Transitions if he can just settle down some.  So far, he’s been off this year finishing 59th in the WGC-CA last week and garnering only a single Top Ten finish out of 6 tournaments.  That’s underperforming for Choi who is considered one of the best on the Tour right now.
  1. Adam Scott +2500 – - Scott had a pretty good 2008.  2009 hasn’t been as kind to him so far but there is a long way to go.  His 66th place finish in the WGC-CA just wasn’t very good at all, but he has made the cut in the four tournaments he has played in and he does have a Top Ten finish in one of the four tourneys.  So, he’s definitely got a shot to win this.

Best Long Shots

  • Rod Pampling +3000 – - Pampling finished tied for 9th last week in the WGC-CA.  His chances of winning the Transitions are much better than the 30 to 1 odds indicate.
  • Retief Goosen +3500 – - Goosen is a solid player and even though he didn’t play well at all in the WGC-CA, he should still be considered for a wager to win in the transitions.  The odds are excellent at 35 to 1 and Goosen has been terrific in these minor tournaments before.
  • Charley Hoffman +4500 – - Like a lot of others on this list, Hoffman finished tied for 13th in the WGC-CA.  That was good enough to tie Tiger Woods.  That means that Hoffman too has a shot to win the Transitions but the odds are vastly different than Stricker and O’Hair, both of which tied for 13th last week.  Stricker and O’Hair are going off at 20 and 18 to 1 respectively while Hoffman is going off at 45 to 1.
