Tournament Matchups
1. Dustin Johnson -125 vs. Phil Mickelson -105 – - DJ’s won the last two Pebble Beach National Pro Am tournaments. Phil got himself into contention at the Phoenix Open last week before blowing it nasty like in Round 3 and Round 4 and finishing in 29th place. The difference in online golf odds between these two in this matchup should be much greater than only -20 so, obviously, I’m backing the chalk.
Pick: Dustin Johnson
2. Jim Furyk -120 vs. Geoff Ogilvy -110 – - This is a tough matchup to handicap. Fury missed the cut at the Sony Open after finishing 9th at the Tournament of Champions to start out his 2011 campaign. Ogilvy finished 13th at the Phoenix Open after not starting at the Tournament of Champions. The slight odds difference doesn’t make enough of a difference for me not to listen to my gut. My gut tells me that Fury wins the matchup.
Pick: Jim Furyk
3. Padraig Harrington +100 vs. Hunter Mahan -130 – - I can’t shun Paddy, even though he finished 58th at the Abu Dhabi Tournament on the European Tour in his last, because the golf line odds for this matchup are just too great between he and Hunter. Mahan is a good golfer, but he’s not -130 better than Harrington. I’ll take a shot on the dog, that’s Paddy.
Pick: Padraig Harrington
4. JB Holmes -120 vs. Vijay Singh -110 – - Holmes’ 5th at the Phoenix Open wasn’t better than Vijay’s 3rd, but I just don’t feel that Singh is good enough to keep it going week-to-week. He finished 20th at the Farmer’s Insurance Open a week before the 3rd in Phoenix. I’ll go with JB because of my disbelief in Vijay.
Pick: JB Holmes
5. Phil Mickelson -140 vs. Jim Furyk +110 – - Mickelson blew it at the Phoenix Open last week after a 67 Round 1 and a 65 Round 2. Furyk should have been working on his swing from January 16th to now since he hasn’t stepped onto a course to play competitively since then. The online golf betting odds are too great between Lefty and Fury. I’m backing Fury.
Pick: Hunter Mahan
6. Dustin Johnson -125 vs. Nick Watney -105 – - Tough matchup because Nick is playing so well right now, but DJ owns Pebble Beach. There’s just no other way to say it. Johnson should do enough to out play Watney this week. If the odds difference was greater, I’d probably back Nick, however.
Pick: Dustin Johnson
