Tournament Matchups

  1. Phil Mickelson -130 vs. Steve Stricker +100 – - Lefty’s won this tournament twice.  Stricker took home the NTO trophy last year by shooting three awesome rounds and hanging on in Round 4.  The golf betting odds don’t justify a wager on Phil because they don’t correctly reflect his chances of beating Stricker.  I’m with Strick.

            Pick:  Steve Stricker

  1. Matt Kuchar -120 vs. Dustin Johnson -110 – - DJ’s 55th place finish at the Pebble Beach National Pro Am last week was horrendous considering that he dominated PB in 2010.  Kuchar is off to a fast start again.  Matt finished 2nd for the FedEx Cup last year.  He’s finished 6th, 5th and 7th in his first 3 tournaments played in 2011.  He’s the guy to back.

            Pick:  Matt Kuchar

  1. Luke Donald -120 vs. Paul Casey +100- – Although Donald tore up Riviera CC last year to finish only 2 strokes behind Stricker for the tournament title, Casey won the Volvo Champions on the European Tour in late January.  If golf online betting handicappers can get past Paul’s 96th place finish at the Qatar Masters in his last tournament played, then he’s obviously the pick because of the great +100 odds to beat Luke in this matchup.

           Pick:  Paul Casey

  1. Retief Goosen -120 vs. Jim Furyk -110 – - This is an interesting matchup.  Goose has finished 2nd at the South African Open, 3rd at the Abu Dhabi and 19th at the Qatar Masters in 3 out of his last 4 tournaments played on the European Tour.  Fury has missed the cut at both the Sony Open and the Pebble Beach National Pro Am in his last 2 tournaments played on the PGA Tour.  Okay, maybe this matchup isn’t all that interesting.  Goose gets the nod.

            Pick:  Retief Goosen

  1. Bill Haas -115 vs. Rickie Fowler -115 – - Haas finally slowed down after an 8th at the Tournament of Champions, a 2nd at the Bob Hope and a 9th at the Farmer’s Insurance Open with a 29th at the Phoenix Open in his last tournament played.  Rickie “Beiber” Fowler finished 13th at the Phoenix Open in his last tournament played.  I’m surprised he’s not the golf tournament favorite in this matchup.  Fowler does well enough to outplay Haas this week.

            Pick:  Hunter Mahan

  1. Dustin Johnson +110 vs. Phil Mickelson -140 – -  Yes, DJ blew it at Pebble Beach last week and, yes, Lefty did play well at PB last week and has won the NTO twice, but I can’t take Phil at -140 versus the gopher in the original  Caddyshack much less versus Dustin Johnson.  Seriously…Lefty is just too inconsistent to back in any matchup unless he’s facing off against Tiger “Spitter” Woods.

           Pick:  Dustin Johnson
