Golf Betting – Masters Picks and Analysis
April 7, 2010
The Masters tee off Thursday and the biggest star in the game is back on the course and aside from the PGA and the man himself, the bookmakers are just as happy to see Tiger Woods back on the course. Tiger attracts more attention on the tournaments, more attention means more bets, and considering the Masters is the biggest golf betting event of the year, Tiger’s return couldn’t have happened at a better time. Let’s look at a few golfers and see if Tiger is the right bet for the 2010 Masters
Tiger Woods 9/2
Tiger Woods is back on the course and preparing for the biggest tournament of the year, while at the same time making amends for the controversy that has chased him since November. After watching his humble media conference Monday, we had the sense that Tiger had finally got it; this was not the robotic Woods that we saw at his contrived media conference in early March. As much as it would be a fantastic story for Woods to come back and win the 2010 Masters but with so much scrutiny on him in his first tournament back, I think Tiger will be happy with a top 10 finish and that’s what he’ll get.
Ernie Els 8/1
Tiger Woods isn’t the only one with relationship troubles, Ernie Els is having troubles of his own. Els has had a contentious relationship with his main caddie Ricci Roberts, so much so that Els has split his caddie duties between Roberts and former hockey player Dan Quinn. It will be Quinn who carries Els bag this weekend and I think he’ll bring him more luck than Roberts has as Els has missed the cut at Augusta at the past three years.
Phil Mickelson 10/1
The man who has been the only one close to matching Tiger Woods’ popularity over the past decade has been Phil Mickelson. He was on his way to being a consistent challenge to Woods until he learned of his wife’s cancer. He has been understandably unfocused on the course, since winning the 2006 Masters, Mickelson is 0-14 in golf’s majors. Until his wife is healthy, Mickelson isn’t a solid bet to win much of anything.
Padraig Harrington 14/1
Padraig Harrington is tied with Vijay Singh, Phil and Ernie with three majors and second on the active players list behind Tiger. With Els, Mickelson noticeably distracted, and Vijay Singh not playing great golf, Harrington could win his first Green Jacket, separating him from the other three time major winners. Harrington is a nice bet to win this Sunday.
Tim Clark 50/1
Tim Clark finished second in the 2006 Masters and has sandwiched 13th place finishes around missing the cut in 2008. At 50/1, he is undervalued and could surprise with the first major of his career.
Stewart Cink 50/1
Cink is a popular pick among the experts and non-experts alike and at 50/1; he’s worth a few bucks of your money.
Retief Goosen 20/1
Goosen has been playing excellent golf this season with 5 top ten finishes. He will have a very good weekend at the Masters. Expect him to be in contention on Sunday.
