Golf Betting – Els is the Favorite in the Golf Sportsbook to Win this Week’s Valero Texas Open
May 12, 2010
Ernie Els, who has had a comeback year of sorts with victories in the WGC-CA and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, is the golf betting favorite to win this week’s PGA Tour Event, the Valero Texas Open.
Els is the most well-known golfer that will step onto the course this week. It makes sense for him to be installed as the favorite even though he’s finished 44th in the Shell Houston Open, 18th in the Masters Tournament, and missed the cut at TPC Sawgrass in the last 3 tournaments that he’s started.
Ernie may be the golf wagering favorite, but is he the best bet in the golf sportsbook?
PGA Tour: Valero Texas Open
Where: TPC San Antonio, San Antonio, Texas
When: May 13th thru May 16th, 2010
Purse: $6,100,000
Best Golf Bet A: Ernie Els +1000
He’s never teed off at TPC San Antonio. Who cares? He’s the only player in the field ranked in the Top 15, leads the PGA Tour in earnings, and is #1 in the FedEx Cup Standings. Ernie is going to blast his way onto the fairways, hit perfect shots out of the bunkers, and show these guys what it means to be a legend. At the double-digit wagering odds, he’s the play.
Best Golf Bet B: Bo Van Pelt +1800
After missing the cut at the Shell Houston Open, Van Pelt has been as good as he’s ever been in his career. He finished 3rd at the Verizon Heritage, 5th at the Quail Hollow Championship, and 4th at the The Players Championship. Van Pelt is ranked 2nd in Total Driving and 2nd in Total Birdies on the PGA Tour. He’s a definite playa at the Valero Texas Open this week.
Worst Golf Wager: Zach Johnson +1400
Z.J. is the 2nd choice in the sportsbook to win the Valero Texas Open, but based on his performance so far in 2010, he’s a definite bet against. Johnson hasn’t garnered a Top 10 finish yet this year and hasn’t finished better than 22nd in 8 straight tournaments. He could turn it around, but at the golf betting odds, it’s probably a good idea to pass on betting him to win.
Best Underdog Golf Bet: Paul Goydos +5500
Goydos finished 3rd at the 2009 Valero Texas Open with a 14 under, a single stroke off of Zach Johnson and James Driscoll (Z.J. beat Driscoll in a playoff). His 2010 hasn’t been that spectacular with 4 missed cuts out of 13 tournaments played, 7 finishes at 38 or worse and only 2 Top 10 finishes, but, at the golf wagering odds, I’m willing to make a case for Goydos to come up big at the Valero Texas Open.
Others to Consider
Adam Scott +2200 – - Three Top 20 finishes in 2010 as well as a nice Top 30 finish at The Players Championship means that Scott might be a good golf wager this week.
Justin Leonard +2200 – - Leonard finished in 5th place at -13 at the 2009 Valero Texas Open. He also has home course advantage having grown up in Texas.
Charley Hoffman +3000 – - He hasn’t finished better than 28th in any tournament this year, but did secure a Top 10 in the 2009 Valero Texas Open.
Sergio Garcia +3000 – - These are the types of tournaments that Sergio is supposed to win. At the 30 to 1 golf betting odds, he’s a must consider.
