Marshall Thundering Herd (+5.5) -110

You have to hand it to Marshall for scheduling big time programs like Ohio State and West Virginia this season. If nothing else, it should get them ready to compete against its weaker CUSA challengers. That said; the Knights aren’t anywhere near the bottom of the barrel when it comes to conference opposition.

With only a one-point win over a middle of the road MAC squad to their credit, head coach Doc Holliday better hope he and his staff corrected enough of the Thundering Herd’s problem areas to compete in this prime time college football pick spot.

The Knights can flat out bring it as evidenced by last Wednesday night’s dismantling of UAB. The Blazers invaded Orlando off its bye after posting 34 points in a one-point win over Troy and 29 points in Neyland Stadium against the Tennessee Volunteers. However, its potent offensive attack by no means threatened the Knights vaunted defense as it held the Blazers to a season low seven points.

Head coach George O’Leary has coached big time programs in the past, and it looks as if he has one of the best stop units in the country at his disposal. The Knights head into Week 7 action giving up an average of just 265.2 total YPG (#9) and 13.9 PPG (#9).

It already limited the potent NC State Wolf Pack offense to just 28 points (averaging 37.5 PPG) and kept K-State stud RB Daniel Thomas in check allowing him to rush for just 3.5 YPC on 22 attempts (season YPC average of 5.44).

Marshall’s offense will be severely up against it trying to move the ball and put points on the board in this college football pick battle. It’s scored an average of just 19.2 PPG (#102) and gained an average of just 300 YPG (#106).

Brian Anderson has completed less than 58 percent of his passes at just 5.8 yards per attempt. He’ll be throwing into the nations 5th ranked pass defense that’s allowed an average of just 148.2 YPG; not good!

On the flipside, the Knights will look to take advantage of a porous Marshall defense that ranks in the bottom third of every major defensive category. Both quarterbacks Rob Calabrese and Jeffrey Godfrey should experience much success via the pass (#95 at 244.4 YPG allowed) and on the ground (#86 at 173.8 YPG allowed).

NCAA Football Insider Tip: We ended up pushing last week’s college football pick on the ‘under’ in the UAB/UCF game simply due to the fact that UCF’s defense added to the Knights point total by returning both a fumble and interception back to the house for scores.

Marshall looks to be way in over its head in this spot regardless of the fact that it’s had 10+ days to prepare for this game.

Though it competed mightily against West Virginia in its previous prime time spot a couple weeks ago, the squad had the added benefit of knowing the personnel due to the head coach’s former ties with the Mountaineers program.

They don’t have that added advantage here, and UCF has dominated the college football pick proceedings both SU & ATS in this recent series winning each of the L/5 meetings SU while posting a 4-1 mark against the closing pointspread.

Look for UCF to continue riding its defense to put enough distance between it and the Herd to secure the road win and cover.
