Gilbert Arenas Charged with Felony Gun Possession
January 14, 2010
If Gilbert Arenas was smiling and taking this whole situation lightly, he’s not anymore. The Wizards guard was officially charged with one count of felony gun possession that carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison.
In released statements, the U.S. Attorney’s office made it clear that Gilbert “did carry, openly and concealed on or about his person, in a place other than his dwelling place, place of business or on other land possessed by him, a pistol, without license issued pursuant to law.”
Incase you’ve been living under a rock, there was an altercation between Gilbert Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton that was a result of a card game that turned bad. It was reported that Crittenton told Arenas he was going to shoot him in his surgically repaired knee, the same one that has kept him out of action for the majority of the past two seasons.
This is still speculation, but it’s alleged that Arenas left two guns in Crittenton’s locker with a note that read “pick one”. Crittenton apparently shot back, no pun intended, that he had his own guns and didn’t need Arenas’.
Well the police didn’t forget about Javaris in this whole mess and his house was apparently searched by Arlington police on Thursday. Crittenton’s lawyer has stated they didn’t find a gun that matches the one used in the altercation.
His lawyer is keeping thing pretty tight lipped but did release a statement on behalf of Crittenton:
"I can confirm that a search warrant was executed on Mr. Crittenton’s apartment today, that Mr. Crittenton cooperated with the officers conducting the search, and that no evidence was found or seized by police."
Its unknown if Crittenton will face any disciplinary action for his role in this mess. One thing is clear though, Gilbert Arenas won’t be playing basketball for a longgggg time. Shame because it looked like he was finally healthy and ready to earn some of that six-year $111 million contract. Rather, the Wizards now have the legal rights to terminate the deal that has acted like a weight around the team’s ankles.
Only time will tell, but I’d put a big chunk of change on the Wizards tossing that contract right in the paper shredder and getting as far away from Agent Zero as possible.
