Get Ready for the NFL Draft – Skill Positions
April 20, 2010
Who needs to wait until the first week of the NFL season in the fall to start placing your football bets? Especially when you’ve got the opportunity to place some wagers this weekend, with the NFL Draft.
Let’s look at a few today, featuring some skill position players.
Quarterbacks taken in the First Round- Over 2 (-600) or Under 2 (+350): You can’t start any NFL Draft discussion without the most important guys on the field can you? So let’s look at just how many quarterbacks exactly will be taken in the first round.
It seems like that for all intents and purposes, former Oklahoma signal caller Sam Bradford will be taken first overall. Easy enough. Behind him, Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen will almost certainly go in the first round too, with many speculating that the Raiders at No. 8 and San Francisco at 13 showing interest.
So when trying to win this wager, it ultimately comes down to whether or not you think Tim Tebow will be drafted in the first round, right?
Looking at this objectively, Tebow isn’t considered by most to be a first round talent. But whoever said the draft is objective? And with so many teams in desperate need of a quarterback (Buffalo at No. 9, Seattle at No. 14), is it impossible to see him going in the first round? Throw in a few wild card scenarios like the Steelers taking Tebow as protection for Ben Roethlisberger, and it seems like there are a lot of cases where three quarterbacks are going to come off the board.
We’re not saying that Tebow will definitely be taken, or even that he should be. Just that it only takes one team to fall in love, and use their own pick, or trade up into the first 32 to make Tebow their guy. And make you money too.
The Play: Over 2 (-600)
Running Backs taken in the First Round- Over 1 ½ (-350) or Under 1 ½ (+225): This NFL football bet is one of the most intriguing on the board.
Because let’s be honest, in today’s NFL every team is playing two running backs constantly, so you’d think that a bunch would be taken in the first round. Well this year may be the exception.
It seems like for all intents and purposes, Clemson’s C.J. Spiller will be off the board at some point in the first round. He’s an explosive athlete, and has the added effect of being a strong return man.
But beyond that, things get pretty dicey.
The next most “talented,” running back would likely be Cal’s Jahvid Best, if you asked most scouts. However, he’s coming off an effective, but injury plagued 2009 season, including one that saw him take a violent hit, and be forced out of the final few games with a concussion.
There’s chatter about Fresno’s Ryan Matthews too, but few prognosticators seem to think that a team will use a first round pick on him.
In the end, it seems like the play is to go under on this one. You’re getting 2.25 to 1 on your money, and with so much uncertainty at the position, this could potentially be one of the best bets on board.
