Gayego and Mambo Meister Hook Up as Horse Racing Favorites in Race 7
September 10, 2010
Two of the most highly respected runners in the United States, the Godolphin bearer Gayego and half a million dollar winner Mambo Meister, hook up as the tepid horse racing favorites in Race 7 at Presque Isle Downs on Friday, the Presque Isle Mile Stakes.
I write tepid horse racing favorites because Mambo Meister is at 7/2 on the morning line and Gayego is at 4/1.
Will either of them prove best in the Presque Isle Mile Stakes or will a longshot ruin their Presque Isle party plans?

12 – Allie’s Event – - 8/1 morning line odds
Sometimes a horse just loves a particular surface and no matter what the pace set-up may be, that horse is going to run well. Allie’s Event isn’t close to being the horse racing favorite in this race, but he could go off at much less than his 8/1 morning horse racing line odds. The reason why is simple. Allie’s Event is an all-weather specialist having won 3 races out of 4 over the plastic. More importantly, the horse is coming off of a scintillating victory at Presque Isle Downs going a mile in a $42,000 allowance race. Sure, this is a huge step up but Allie’s Event was so impressive in that race that I’m confident the step up won’t hurt him. The horse has 5 victories and 4 second place finishes out of 11 lifetime races. I think he’s going to make it 6 out of 12 on Friday.
4 – Gayego – - 4/1 morning line odds
There’s no way that horseplayers get 4/1 on Gayego in this race. 3/1 or even 5/2 is more likely since the Saeed Bin Suroor trainee is dropping out of Grade I races and into this non-graded, but highly competitive, stakes race. Gayego finished eighth in the Dubai Golden Shaheen, one of the most important sprint races in the world, earlier this year. He’s come back to the states running less than spectacular, but that’s okay because there isn’t a horse close to the now retired Majesticperfection who beat him in the Grade I A.G. Vanderbilt Handicap in his last. Gayego is a very, very good horse and the 1.5 million dollar winner must be taken seriously in this.
2-Successful Dan – - 8/1 morning line odds
Before finishing 5 th by 2-lengths in his last, Successful Dan was undefeated. The Charles Lopresti trainee had won three races in a row including the Grade III Northern Dancer Stakes as a 3-year-old last June. He’s suffered through small injuries throughout his short career, but Lopresti says he’s ready and there’s no doubt that he’s the best presser/front-runner in this race. If he can track likely pacesetter I Know Why through soft fractions, then Successful Dan is going to get a huge jump on Mambo Meister, Gayego and Allie’s Event.
Horse Wagering Strategy
Mambo Meister, the likely horse racing favorite, appears vulnerable in this spot.
I’ll bet longshot Allie’s Event to win and place. I will key Allie’s Event in an exacta over Mambo Meister, Successful Dan and Gayego. I will reverse for less.
I will bet a trifecta with Allie’s Event, Successful Dan, Gayego with Allie’s Event, Successful Dan, Gayego, Mambo Meister, with Allie’s Event, Successful Dan, Gayego, Mambo Meister, 10-Ryan’s Gift.
Good luck!
