Based on the last four meetings in this series, it’s tough to envision too much scoring, as the sports betting totals have all finished under Saturday’s posted total of 46. South Carolina (4-2) won’t take Vanderbilt (2-4) lightly after the Gamecocks let a lead get away last week and lost at Kentucky 31-28. Despite the totals trends in this series, South Carolina is averaging 31 points per game this season; their highest output in over eight years.
South Carolina averages 395 yards per game and a solid 6.4 yards per play. Contrast that to Vanderbilt, who is last in the SEC averaging 315 yards per game and 5.4 yards per play. Vanderbilt’s defense is at the bottom of the league with Tennessee, allowing 379 yards per game, with South Carolina not much better at 371 yards per game.
South Carolina should be able to move the ball on the ground effectively, as Vanderbilt allows a league worst 192 yards per game rushing and teams that cannot stop the run are a sports betting play against.
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier called out his secondary this past week following the breakdowns against Kentucky. The Gamecocks are allowing a league-worst 270 yards passing per game, 70 percent completions and very poor 7.8 yards per pass play.
However, sports betting players note that Vanderbilt may not be able to take advantage, as the Commodores average just 162 yards per game passing.
South Carolina leads the SEC in both red zone offense and defense. However, they will play this contest without their top running back and scorer with 12 touchdowns, freshman Marcus Lattimore. The sports betting star suffered an ankle injury in last week’s game, but last years leading rusher Kenny Miles is a solid replacement.
Junior quarterback Stephen Garcia is having a solid season completing 70 percent of his passes for 221 yards per game and the #2 passer efficiency rating in the SEC. The leagues top receiver is South Carolina’s Alshon Jeffery with 115 yards per game and over 17 yards per reception. He will play this week despite being slowed a bit by a thigh bruise.
Vanderbilt will play this contest without senior starting center Joey Bailey, and a true freshman will take his place. That is an issue as the Commodores offense struggles and quarterback Larry Smith passes for just 143 yards per game and 54 percent completions.
Vanderbilt’s offensive line was blown up at the point of attack last week by Georgia and rushed for just 58 yards while passing for just 82 in a 43-0 blowout by Georgia.
Vanderbilt was beaten on this field by LSU 27-3 earlier this season and with South Carolina’s strength along the line of scrimmage and at the skill positions, sports betting backers believe the Gamecocks should bounce back this week against a weaker opponent despite struggling the last three years in this role as double digit favorite.
NCAA Insider Tip: Vanderbilt is 3-9 ATS their last 12 home games. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is 15-2 against Vanderbilt. Look for the Cocks to rebound in a big way off last week’s loss in Lexington with an impressive sports betting victory over the ‘Dores.
My NCAA Football Predictions: South Carolina (-12.5) -110
