Futures Bets Paying off on Super Bowl 44

February 3, 2010

If you put money down on the New Orleans Saints before the NFL preseason started, you could be in line for a nice payday. The preseason Super Bowl Odds had the New Orleans Saints listed at 22 to 1 to win Super Bowl XLIV.

The Saints didn’t seem significantly better than they were a season ago, bookmakers expected them to have incredible offense and a defense that was as bad as the offense was good. However, the Saints brought in a new defensive coordinator. The Saints coaching staff added Gregg Williams at the request of Sean Payton. In fact, Payton was so serious about adding Williams to the mix that he paid $250,000 of his own money towards Williams’ salary.

The Saints responded to Williams’ aggressive style, the team didn’t turn into run stuffers or shut down specialists but their new style allowed them to force fumbles, sack quarterbacks and intercept passes. The change was palpable as the team was no longer on the losing side of high scoring shootouts, the defense would come often come through with a turnover. We saw just such a turnover in the NFC championship game when Tracy Porter intercepted a Brett Favre pass at the 22-yard line; the interception stopped the Vikings from kicking a potentially game winning field goal.

Gregg Williams hasn’t hid his desire to knock Peyton Manning around a bit. We’ve already seen that the Saints defense isn’t above putting a hurting on a legendary quarterback. Just ask the now retired Kurt Warner, who felt the Saints wrath in the Divisional game and the might be, might not be retiring Brett Favre who the Saints pounded all game long the Championship game. Will he get to Peyton Manning, those who took the 22/1 Super Bowl Odds sure hope so.
